That said, like many, I'm migrating more towards my own e-commerce site
    .

Good idea, but you will still be paying fees if you wish to accept card payments. I pay 20 pounds/month plus VAT for a payment gateway and also fees on each debit card and a percentage on credit card transactions with a minimum charge of 25 pounds/month. Unfortunately this is not cheap either (48 pounds/month even if there are no sales).

You will have to work hard on your site to get good visibility in Google searches - Ebay does have enormous coverage.

Don't be put off having your own web site - I just don't want people here to think that it is a cost free selling option!

It really is not, by the time you add advertising costs to keep your visibility and promote yourself add to that web hosting and merchant accounts. I'm sure that mine in the end costs me more than ebay. Although if you generate good sales and customer service which we do you seem to get better return customers than ebay also the greater control on look and feel is an advantage

Alternatively, you now have £260 ish in your pocket that you would not have otherwise had if you left the clubs in the back of the garage.

Or if you listed them for free in the local paper, you may only have got £200 for them...

    Horses for courses.

If you do not like the fees, you are not forced to use eBay.

Well done you have successfully managed to state the blindingly obvious. Totaly unhelpful as it is thanks for sharing your wisdom with all who gather.

Ebay is a rip off for small sellers and whilst many of us realise that we shouldn't use ebay we may still like to register our disapointment with this fact.

confused0024.gif So why are you dragging a post up from last September? Just seems rather pointless

    Expensive compared to ?

Sale at £300 - pay £30 commission. Could sell in local paper or car boot, reaching a fraction of the potential buyers and might make £200.

Which is the better deal ?

This just makes ebay useless, you get excited that your bid is getting as high as u want it and then they take a good 40? when ur item sells for 300 and its brand new? I didnt know it was that bad, you pay to list the item that should be enough, ebay dont deserve to take that much for each sale that means you have to expect around 20% more than what the item is sold for in the shops? Just to get the price you intended it to sell for but get nothing of the sort

I don't know why this old thread has been resurrected again, I think for the sake of clarity it is probably best if i close it as the info is now well out of date.
