The exposure eBay provides is worth their fees. You will almost always achieve a higher value selling through eBay.0

gumtree is the way forward. No listing fees, buyer collects, so no postage costs, cash in hand, no final value fees, paypal fees, whatever. If you have a popular item then that is the way to go. I live in London though so there are more people looking on Gumtree. More obscure things, however, I agree eBay is the only way right now.0

Fine if you live in a city but a huge proportion of the uk doesn't also as a seller you may not get as good prices (even with fees) as there is less exposure to worldwide sellers. No buyer protection which also puts buyers off0

As gumtree is owned by ebay, what are the chances of them starting to charge people to list at some point soon?0

The answer is for Ebay and Paypal to lower their fees and not rip people off, they should know by now it's about quantity of transactions which makes them profit.
Thanks for all the comments (relevant ones) but I'm amazed you are so relaxed about it. Ebay gave me a 50% reduction so even they realised they were ripping me off..........I strongly recommend you ignore everything I say. Investments can go up as well as down, and is purely gambling0

The thing is with ebay is that whilst we may not like having to use them we understand what they are going to charge us and factor that in.
I earn a very healthy wad using them as they give me a market place that I previous couldn't reach and for me it's worth the 10%.
That said, like many, I'm migrating more towards my own e-commerce site.Terms & Conditions Apply0

Tried Gumtree- as the other poster said, it's probably fine if you live in a city...
All I got were a few emails asking (in V. poor English" whether I still had my "Item," how much it was (price clearly displayed) and whether I could ship it to them straight away!
Yep, Ebay takes a wad, but you know that when you list- at least you do if you bother to read the instructions! The wider audience certainly gives you a better price that you'd get elsewhere.
I'm just watching something I thought I'd give a whirl on Ebay (as it was free listing!) reaching over £50 as it nears the end. I was going to offer it on Freecycle! :eek:Worse things will have happened in the world today..."The only thing that really matters, it to love and to be loved."0
