Any casual walkers here? I mean walking for excercise but not power walking or anything like that.
I want to walk regularly just for fitness fresh air and just maybe lose some weight.
It will be mostly along streets and since I have arthritis giving me painfull ball of the foot i will need good shoes and wondered if any of you could recomend some.

Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

Hi needmoney, I do a lot of walking, I have 2 dogs that need lots of excercise, but mostly wear wellies or trainers. I did buy a pair of leather boots, (Countryjack) but decided they were too nice for dog walks, there comfortable. My husband wears hiking boots when he walks the dogs, which is not very often, he has 2 pairs, hi-tec and karrimor and he keeps telling me I should get some, says there lovely and comfy,I just find the wellies easier to keep clean. If you have a Sports soccer/Donnay near where you live, you should get some decent walking shoes at reasonable prices, this is where he gets most of his. Sorry I cant be of more help.Good luck with the walking, I enjoy it so much and recommend walking to anyone wanting to loose weight, when we got our first dog, I lost half a stone in 2 weeks, and everyone now comments on how much healthier I look for getting more freshair/excercise, cant think what I must have looked like before :rotfl:

Thanks for that bulchy, yes I was fitter when I had my dogs too, not an option at the moment though. They're always a good reason to walk I sometimes feel a bit silly walking for nothing as if everybody knows I'm walking for nothing:rolleyes:
silly me:D

You need a decent pair of walking shoes/trainers with good cushioning. Walking on pavements is very unforgiving as they are so hard. A good option is a pair of outdoor trainers, as opposed to "normal" trainers. They are more rugged than trainers, tend to be in darker colours (show less dirt than white ones) and have good grips on the soles. They are not as "formal" as a traditional walking boot & are usually shoes rather than boots. I bought my last pair from a Nike outlet store, they are Gore-tex & cost me £23! The original price was nearer £80.
A good waterproof is also sadly a must for walking in this country!0 -
Thanks Lucy £80:eek: lol wouldn't mind £23 or even more though for comfort.Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

needmoney, you would be amazed at the amount of people I see on my 'dog walking route' that are out walking just to keep fit, my little dog finds them a bit strange though, she looks for there dog, and if they dont have one, she gives them a wide berth, and a little grumble. Maybe you could offer your services to friends/neighbours/family as a dog walker now and again, for a small fee of course.

Cotton Traders walking shoes/boots are good. You can often find them 1/2 price too. These are waterproof and are v.v.comfy.
Got a leaflet from a magazine advertising them 1/2 price last week but threw it away so can't tell you where to go on line to look for them (soz).
If you have a local tourist office in your town, you can get a booklet that tells you of local walks which are not too strenuous (sp) plus it can give you items to look out for. (At least we have one in our town!) They are very good to get your interest going.
I'm doing the Calderdale Way at the mo. with my daughter and it's split up into easy sizeable chunks and I can do it no problem (I'm an overweight/unfit 50+ year old! but getting better)"It is always the best policy to speak the truth-unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar." - Jerome K Jerome0 -
I know ebay isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I searched "walking shoes" in the "sporting goods" section & there are lots in there. Even if you don't want to buy from ebay it will give you an idea of what to look for. Hawkeshead is another good one to look at.0

I love walking for exercise too. A couple of months ago I bought a pair of Hi-TEC walking shoes from JJB sports for £20. I wear them fairly regularly for walking (on road or cross country) and I haven't had any problems with them at all.0

I got some nice walking boots from Decathlon last year.
should of been £99 but got them and a waterproof jacket (Should of been £45) for I think it was £25.
I do prefer though when walking on the road etc to use my trainers. I have some Puma sprint slip ons and they are the most comfy trainers I have ever owned! It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice0
