Fair point tho. In that situation, if the granddaughter came away unscathed but the bike was wrecked, should the neihbour not pay for the bike?

Not if the child was at fault!

I think sometimes people are a bit too quick to jump on their high horses and give a bit of stick! The OP has asked a genuine question and people immediately assume s/he is trying to weasel out of paying. They asked if the car owner was right in saying the daughter should pay and if so can she claim on her house insurance- not how can I get away with not paying!

Then we agree. Whoever causes the damage (if it's a minor then whoever is responsible for the child) has to pay up. Simples.

OP asked a question about whether she must pay for damage and in asking that question, has to be prepared for the possibility that the answer may be YES.

For the benefit of those like me who may also have missed it, can you point out where it was said OP's trying to weasel out of paying.

No, we don't agree. No one HAS to pay up!

Ok, the neighbour quite reasonably wants payment for the damage which, based on what is posted he would likely be awarded in civil proceedings. She still doesn't HAVE to pay then either ..until the baliffs come round.

so being a parent means you don't have to take responsibility for your child? irrespective of accident or deliberate damage?...

The parents are only legally responsible if they have been negligent.
