Forces Contract O2 wont suspend as both phones in partners name

We have an O2 contract (two phones) in my name as my husband is in the forces and has to be away from home often. I have just called O2 today as he is off to Afghan for 6 months, and they wont suspend his phone as the contract is in my name. If it was in his name they could do it.
It's a vicious circle - the reason the contract is in my name is so I can manage things while he's away, but now we are stuck paying over £40 per month for his phone which will not be used..... PLEASE HELP!
p.s. because we're not 9 months past upgrade we're not permitted to reduce the tariff either.

  • I can see why your upset and frustrated, But can also see O2`s point of view too, I think the only thing you can really do is organise a change of ownership from yourself to your husband.

This will take time so if your husband is due to leave soon, i would put this in motion ASAP as it will require his signature, It would take away your control of the account but you should be able to have a password on his account that will at the very least give you read access only.

Not sure what kind of communication your husband has whilst he`s away, but maybe if he wrote you a letter that you could send to O2 asking for his account to be suspended due to him being deployed once it has all been agreed (just in case he can`t use a phone whilst away to call them)

    Hope this helps
  • Thanks - unfortunately we can't change the contracts (without significant cost) as we recently upgraded, so he'll be back by the time we could amend. I understand why O2 put this policy in place, but you would think they would have a solution for situations like ours, there must be other people in the same boat. Once he's back we will have our own contracts and probably not with O2. Lesson learnt - expensively!
  • a change of ownership is different to amending the contract, I`d give O2 a call and explain that you would like to do a change of ownership on one of the contracts, They will have a a form that they send out,

It basically takes your name off the contract and replaces it with the other party, Beware though as far as i can remember it initiates a new contract term, So make sure you ask about it when you request the form

O2 don't do change of ownership.
