but solve the squeaks first (I'm a strong believer these days in silicone spray (also a more expensive 3-in-1 equivalent) to fix squeaks!).

How do you apply it - I'd have thought it doesn't penetrate very well - do you just soak the tops of the joints with it?0 -
I'd spray it liberally along the joints and hope it finds it way in - i guess if it's screwed down then you might be able to unscrew and open up the joints a little. I'd spray around the screw/nail holes too. I should point out i've not tried this..but for a fiver if it ends the annoying squeaks its worth a try.
