Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps.
Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 4.5Mbps or greater.

ADSL Max is in layman terms a quicker broadband connection(up to 8Mb) , however I have just changed my 2mb connection to the ADSL MAX and I am far from happy as BT seem to have rushed this thing through without the proper infrastructure in place.
My advice stay with your 2mb connection and wait for at least 6 mths to see how BT get themselves out of this mess.

ADSL MAX is a new higher speed service from BT (launched on 31st March 2006). MAX provides download speeds of up to 8Mb/s with upload increased from 256 kb/s (standard ADSL) up to 448 kb/s (Max)
Your line test tells you that you could receive an ADSL (normal broadband) speed of up to 2Mbps, or an ADSL Max (new BT product) service of 4.5Mbps or better. Lots of ISPs are now offering ADSL Max services. It offers faster download and upload (depending on distance from the exchange) than the (ADSL) services that have been offered so far in the UK (apart from LLU and cable). How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

If you've only just switched to ADSL Max, you should be aware that for the first 10 days, your line can be a bit flaky on this service. They monitor your line for this time, then set the highest stable speed that your line will take.
Lots of people think straight away that there is something very wrong with the service. They are not aware of this 10 day test period on their line. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Upgraded mine on the 10th. went up to 5.25meg until 2weeks ago when it dropped to .925 at the lowest. It seems that BT have still not set a Max. Stable Rate for my line either. So the advice to wait is very sound, let all the wrinkles get ironed out before you join.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

can anything be done about upping the speed generally if you are "far" from the exchange?0

if you're only able to get say a maxmium of 512 at the moment then you'll still be only able to get that maxmium speed.
Use the ADSL checker on adslguide.org.uk & it'll shed more light on it
