Perhaps try to see this from your manager's point of view. They are paid more mainly because it is their job to keep track of staff and make sure they are working hard.

Outside of a few specific jobs where a function has to be covered all the time I very much doubt this includes controlling and tracking someone's toilet breaks down to the last inch.

I know for you this isn't the case but a lot of staff use a "quick toilet break" as an excuse for a 15 min chat on their phone etc.

Which is why we have performance reviews and a formal disciplinary procedure for underperformance is it not? If someone is doing a good job it doesn't matter how long they spend in the toilet. If someone isn't doing their job it still doesn't matter how long they spend in the bathroom.

You say you don't want to be treated like a four year old but at the moment, in my opinion, this is how you are acting - no adult suddenly HAS to go to the toilet that second, and your team leader wants to know where you are - so just say about 15 mins before you want to go, "Do you mind when it's quiet if I quickly use the toilet?". They're happy and will probably be sure to find time to send you, and you don't get it in the neck.

I hope you're never struck down with any of the reasons that can cause a normally healthy adult to need to run off to the bathroom constantly. Not only are many of these conditions painful and/or embarassing, but I'd be worried that you'd do yourself an injury through your king canute style wish to hold back the tide, as it were.

Trust me, for a team leader there's nothing more embarrassing than your manager asking where a member of staff is and you having to say you don't have a clue - and this is the position you are putting your TL/AM in.

If this is the biggest problem you have faced as a manager/supervisor wherever you work then I hope to God I never get a job there for all kinds of reasons. Sorry but you're either being very melodramatic with that statement or you must work in the most appalling sweatshop.

why do so many people take a simple question (what are the rules on going to the toilet at work) and turn it into an attack on the Original Poster? I think she just wanted to know if other people had had the same problem and how it was resolved. then it just got silly - then it got nasty - and i have noticed over many different threads that this is a pattern on this forum (except in certain sub-forums - and I am not saying which ones because i dont want to attract those nasty holier than thou posters! I am thinking carefully about posting threads as I dont need strangers being nasty to me.

The rules are you abide by your company policy, I'd have thought?

The OP seems incapable of doing so and therefore it is relevent to question why ever not!

And for those talking about bladder conditions and the like (always got to be a medical condition these days hasn't there? We must be a very unhealthy nation, that's all I can say) ; I am sure the OP would have mentioned those in her OP and, also, she has stated she waited 20 minutes so she is hardly someone who needs to go there and then.

Nothing holier than thou about offering an alternative viewpoint.

    And 'being nasty'?

    Come on...!! :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Well when I mentioned medical issues in my reply I was specifically addressing someone's claim that there was no possible reason why an adult might need to go to the bathroom at short notice. There clearly are possible reasons.

To the OP I notice that you said that what was happening, as regards cleaning the floor, was harassment. You company will have a policy on this so might be worth checking this out too.

funnily enough - the factory i mentioned earlier did have a policy - you had to ask line supervisor - and you were allowed two minutes! not allowed to smoke in toilets (this was in 1973) but - this was good - you were allowed to make toilet requests no more than five times per 8 hours shift - i think this is as accurate as i can remember, not having a hard copy of contract. of course - every one ignored it!

Your ignorance and intolerance does not become you - yes we are a very unhealthy nation, actually. Don't you watch documentaries or read a newspaper? Research by SkillsActive in 2006 found that specialisms account for around 80% of the population. Many minor complaints go undiagnosed.

My last three jobs have been in physical activity - two in private gyms (one very exclusive/ expensive), and the third in the workplace. The vast majority of my clients are 'healthy' enough to be in employment yet I find time and time again most are not healthy at all - overweight, occasional pain in their back or knees, asthma, history of depression.

I hope you will have the good grace to apologise.

Firefox - humour me. What is Bestpud apologising for exactly?
  • Are you sure youve not got a urine infection, or some other underlying problem. I know some people need to go to the loo more often than others but not being able to hold a wee for a 3 hour shift is pretty bad really. Try advice already given,, try cutting caffeine and other drinks that will stimulate your bladder a few hours before your shift.
If you are feeling really bullied about this then I'd speak to the manager about this, the people who are 'bullying' you may just not be aware that they are making you feel so unhappy.
Unfortunately some people just don't realise how harsh they sound towards others,, and to be honest I wouldn't want a 16 year old telling me whether I could or could not go to the loo regardless. No offence 16 year olds but I'd probably laugh at their immature tell tal attitude it seems they have towards you.
