Internet browsing on Orange...is it 3G or GPRS?

Hi

Thinking of adding the Orange £5 p/m web plan to my orange plan (Virgin EQ tariff) as the O2 3G signal is pants on my iphone 3GS. Called up Orange, they said no problem i can take that option but the £5 for web access is only for GPRS internet access, not 3G internet. Is this true? I was under the impression that web browsing on all mobile networks is 3G and if there is no 3G signal, then you surf on the GPRS or EDGE networks.

Also i read somewhere that Orange and 3 share their 3G networks....is this also true?

Cheers :)

Your sim won't be 3g compatible. the Virgin EQ plan is years old, well before 3g came along and the sim won't be able to access it. Orange aren't upgrading the older plans with a new 3g sim as they want rid of them off the system.

3 used to to use Oranges 2g masts as a fall back when there was no 3g available on their own network.

Thanks for that. Yes i've had the Virgin EQ tariff for a while (since 2001) but my sim card was replaced in 2004 when i lost my phone...so i guess my current sim is not 3g compatible? If i was to "lose" my current phone, would the replacement sim they send be 3G?

    Cheers :)
  • Doubtful I think theyd just send you a 2g sim again. When I cancelled my orange contract the payg sim they gave me was 2g, now Im on a 30 day contract with orange and again its only a 2g sim.
