SAMSUNG BCE1197-Silver Smart Oven £99.99 Currys online only

These are the fancy new things which allow you to scan a code (on the side of Marks and Spencers Ready Meals I have noticed them, probably on other things too) and it will cook your food to perfection (supposedly). £99.99 is not bad considering this contains a microwave, a conventional oven, and a conventional grill. Also, the same oven is well over £250 elsewhere so I don't know if this is a pricing error or not!

The black one http://www.currys.co.uk/product.php?sku=736868 is £299.99

Just remember to untick the fondue thing, unless you want it :)

Now if only I had the money to buy myself one  , my credit card debt is bad en ough as it is so I'm going to let you lot snap this one up! (looking for a job at moment). Hope this helps someone anyway...

Hi Thanks for the info, can someone please tell me what these are like for consumption compared to say buying a gas double oven, as we are a family of 7 and need more "cooking room" but I'm hessitant to get one incase it eats the electric. Appologies for my ignorance in advance :D;)
If you find my post helpful please do not click thanks, instead please send the thanks to my paypal account.

    Microwave wattage 900 watts
    Oven wattage 1700 watts
    Grill wattage 1300 watts

are the ratings given on the website for this. Thats about 4000 watts in total, which according to this website http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/howmuch.html is nearly as much as a tumble dryer or electric water heater, or full electric oven. But of course when used just as a microwave, or as a grill, or as an oven. It will only use that amount of electric at that time and I don't think any programme will involve using all 3 at any one time.

    http://www.ukpower.co.uk/running-costs-elec.asp might be useful :)

Ive been trying to find more out about this microwave the last couple of days as im thinking of replacing mine. I cant find anything about how many items actually have the scannable barcode on though. I know it says on the Samsung website that its a partnership between Birdseye and M&S i think it was who will be making the food with the barcodes on. I have 3 or 4 items in my freezer of Birdseye and they havent got them on.

I wonder if this microwave is a bit of a flop, which is why they have reduced them to clear and why there doesnt seem to be much food that can be scanned with them? On the other hand some sites talk as if this is new technology and hasnt long been out in which case why are they reducing the price so much?

I searched many sites to try and find reviews from people who actually own one and couldnt find any. I hope someone on here owns one and can leave their opinions about them. If so is it easy to use as a normal microwave/oven where you set it yourself rather than scanning?

I cannot find any food with the bar codes on either.

Maybe this is just a promotional offer to get more people to buy one, as they have only just come out?

It seems too much of a gimmick if there is nothing that has codes on it.

Do you really need a code to be shown how to heat baked beans, and do eggs come with codes that tell you how to make scrambled/poached eggs.

I think many things you would actually cook will not have these bar codes.

    I found this News Story

Smart Oven that takes cooking instructions from the barcode

14 March 2006 - Samsung has launched what it is called the “Dream Kitchen Invention” - an oven that will cook food to perfection with the help of a barcode.

While most people are starting to worry that they eat too many ready meals, Samsung and Birds Eye are offering the mealtime “revolution” in the guise of a Smart Oven that uses Smart Codes, (unique 2D barcodes) with pre-programmed settings for individual food products and frozen pre-prepared meals.

So far it seems that just Birds Eye has signed up to the service but it does mean that all you have to do is scan the Smart Code on the food packaging and the oven automatically cooks the food to the right times.

Although we personally have never heard of a barcode oven before here at Pocket-lint towers, according to Samsung recent research commissioned by Birds Eye, reveals that nearly one in five people (17%) rate a barcode controlled oven as the kitchen innovation they crave most.

Freezing expert, Phil Balderamos from Birds Eye, said: “Our research revealed that people want more convenience in the kitchen but the new Smart Oven goes one step further than that. Not only does it make cooking easier, it also enhances the end result. Now you'll be able to tuck into a shepherd's pie ready meal with a crusty top just like your mum used to make it in a matter of minutes”.

Birds Eye's Phil Balderamos said: “This launch could just be the start of many more futuristic kitchen innovations. Other ‘smart' inventions that the research highlighted include mobile technology controlled freezers that, when triggered, become ovens, enabling consumers to dial in on their way home from work and have a delicious cooked meal awaiting them on arrival”.

    So, it's basically a combi-microwave, right?

    grrrrr....none left at the moment!

i think this is amazing- as a design technology teacher i am dead excited! i love these new technologies!

will take a while for products to have the bar codes, but think about it, a decent combi-microwave can be around £60 for £40 extra you get a well smart microwave to boast about (yes smart technologies are exciting!) which is eye pleasing and doubles as a fan assisted oven!

perfect for me as i only have a single oven and a disgusting brown microwave! great find!

I don't think it's amazing at all. We had barcode-operated video recorders 15 years ago which programmed themselves by scanning pages of the Radio Times. A lot more useful than telling your oven how many minutes to zap your overpriced ready-meal, and they got nowhere. There's very little innovation in this product. If you want a combi oven, spend £70 or so on the ones that pop up regularly at Aldi etc.

Lol - If you scan a bottle of Flash, I wonder if it will clean itself as well - now that would be smart technology in my book!
