if you dont like the fact that peopel have handled the food its pretty simply dont by it, if i want fruit/veg/bakery items i only by prepacked not because soemones touched it or anything just dont liek the fact they ve been lying open in the store all day.

tbh givin the scone a squeeze isnt that bad, ive been in a store before and saw a old lady who wasnt the cleanest of people pick apples up and dig her nails in to see if it was too hard or too soft.

    Some interesting replies.

I agree that if I open a door, put my hands on the stairs as I struggle up them, go out into the air without a face mask and a tank of oxygen that I'm going to pick up millions of little germs. That's the nature of life and if I want to have any standard of life at all then I've got to accept them - and, well there is no difficulty there. While I'm not scientifically minded I do think there is a mountain of difference between everyday germs that our systems are really used to and a virus like Swine Flu.

What I do not accept though is that foods that I put straight into my mouth without cleaning, like scones, should be on open sale so that any Tom, !!!!!! or Harry can spread their dirty germs all over them.

Ask yourself the question why are they sold this way? The answer to me seems simple to save the retailer money, to make their profits bigger with no consideration for any possible health matters. And before you jump to any conclusions I have no objections to profits.

I don't buy loose food that the public have access to and which I cannot wash, and I get buy quite well. We are, however, been reminded day and daily about the dangers of Swine Flu and been to advised to: 'CATCH IT. BIN IT. KILL IT.' I wonder though if the woman I mentioned in my opening post will be paying much attention to that ad and if after having a good sneeze she picks up a little scone and gives it a squeeze - just to make sure it is fresh.

Have you ever thought that the less germs you expose yourself to the more susceptible you are to picking up something nasty?

Food has been sold with way for hundreds of years. The only difference now is that society is so obsessed with anit-bacterial this, anti-viral that, that the body's own natural defences are being depleted to near-dangerously low levels. Just look at how sickly and allergic many children are today compared to 30-40 years ago.

I for one will be writing to my MP and drawing this situation to his attention and I would ask Money Saving members to write to their MP's and ask what they are going to do about this sever health risk.

Wouldn't it be more to the point to write to the supermarkets in question and let them know why you won't be shopping there in future ?

Much of the "speciality" bread and rolls in my supermarket is left uncovered.
Better avoid that at all costs now as well.

    Dreadful habit.
I have found that Johnnie Foreigner is fond of this unwrapped food malarky.
I assume we can blame it on the EU?

(in what I've seen I'd say 99% of the population) & I'm the only one out of 40 at work who does it, and it's considered weird. amazing.

It's not exactly a consumers right issue more of a consumer awareness topic so this is probably the best place to post.

A couple of years back I was shopping in one of my local supermarkets, one that I hadn't been in for a few months, and certainly not since it had underwent its refit.

Now this particular supermarket has a great reputation for its meat and bread counter and my reason for calling was to collect some fresh scones for visitors I was expecting later that day. Imagine my surprise when I noticed this woman lifting the scones and giving them a gently squeeze just to make sure they were fresh  Now she put a few of them back and went on about her business. Needless to say I didn't, or do not buy fresh bread from that supermarket any more.

We've only recently got a M&S food store in our town and again to my horror I see that even a shop of M&S standing display unwrapped self service breads. Think of the germs that must be passed on in these stores!

Like myself I'm sure you've seen the ads on the box about Swine Flu giving us all the advice on how to avoid spreading the virus. I wonder though what they are going to do about situations like I've mentioned above. Would I be exaggerating to say that saving the wages of a few counter staff is more important to the supermarkets than the potential germs their customers could pick up from contaminated food. To be honest I'm surprised Health and Safety have not anything to say on this issue!

I for one will be writing to my MP and drawing this situation to his attention and I would ask Money Saving members to write to their MP's and ask what they are going to do about this sever health risk.

Bread rolls and many other bakery products have been sold in supermarkets loose for years. Yes, it is probably a little unhygenic, but I don't think anything will ever change.

If you don't like it - shop elsewhere. Some supermarkets sell this type of product now loose but in individual clear packages. If this is something that really does upset you, perhaps you need to find somewhere that does this.
