Will also need to keep in touch with home/work if train is late etc.

why not look at the t-mobile blackberry payngo
it will pick you e-mails up(with in 15 min of getting them in your inbox,if not faster) ,allow you on the net ,there not has good has the iphone when it comes to music,,it might not have has many apps has the iphone put it do's come with 12month unlimited net and e-mails (1GB) in with the price ,
    msn,face book,all that built in ,
it's not cheep because your paying up front for the net and e-mail access £179 at t-mobile
you only pay for calls, sms, and mms ,just like your payngo know

and if you have a dongle you can us it for that too (your not suppose to put i do)
there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff

Blackberry might not last you the whole day if you're using it during the day however. I use Sony Ericsson because I commute 3 hours a day as well, my Pearl would be stretched to last a whole day of usage (blackberry battery life is meant to be around 4-5 hours I believe, although SE can be anything up to 10 depending on the model)
