If you call Delta, they will tell you how much it costs to upgrade your ticket. Expensive is subjective, what you may class as expensive someone else may find to be very reasonable.Gone ... or have I?0

You don't have a chance of getting an upgrade, so don't think about it. Unless you pay, of course. From Poland...with love.

Are you talking about this specific airline or upgrades in general?
We went to Canada at Easter with Air Canada and on the return flight we were sat at the gate with the rest of the passengers waiting to board there was an announcement asking for anyone who would consider coming off the overbooked flight to see an attendent, offering a £500 CAD voucher compensation.
My husband and I volunteered and we were booked on the next available flight 6 hours later and was upgraded to executive class! I'd do it again just for the voucher so the upgrade was fantastic!

Upgrades in general.
If you have status, it's a different story - but if you're an ordinary traveller, then it's simply not going to happen. If it does happen, then it's fantastic - but anyone with an interest in aviation operations will tell you never to expect it or to try (unless it's a case of volunteering!).
I'm actually amazed that they're still allowed to overbook. From Poland...with love.

We are going to use the vouchers for flights back to Canada to visit my in-laws or to visit my sister in California next Easter and we will not hesitate to volunteer again immediately (we 'ummm'd & aaarrr's for about 20 mins before we volunteered last time).
We don't know the ins & outs as we are not frequent flyers but thanks to these vouchers we will have flown 3 times within 12 months.DEBT FREE BY 60Starting Debt 21st August 2019 = £11,024

Those that have volunteered to take a later flight are more likely to be upgraded than those that have not. Think of it as a 'thank you' from the airline. However for many the inconvenience of a delayed start to or return from a holiday would far outweigh the benefit of an upgrade.Gone ... or have I?0

Yesterday, at Heathrow, I asked for assistance for my mother to get to her gate. Her boarding pass and passport were checked over and the desk noticed she was 78 last week. After a quick telephone call they told me that her seat allocation had to be changed. I asked why and the reply was, 'because she's now in first class so tell your mother happy birthday from BA'! Fantastic - my lovely mum felt like the queen for the day! A huge round of applause for a member of staff who wasn't asked for anything out of the ordinary but decided to make an elderly lady feel special.0

BA upgraded us going to Mumbai, no 'status' and not the smartest passengers to check-in so don't know why but thank you BA.0 -
We got a free upgrade on Lufthansa in the past and we did't have any major "status" so it can happen..maybe a rare thing these days but it does happen.
