Have managed to get out to check on whether my seedlings have survived this rain with their little arm bands. Looks like they have, and to top it all have noticed that my carrots are starting to look like they have proper carrot tops, only little but it's much better than i expected. Even my toms are starting to wriggle their roots and are growing now that they are in pots.
Only one flaw though, used the toilet roll trick for some flower and spinich seedlings, thought i would be clever and put the spinich in the white tubes. Sounds ok doesn't it? Turns out that once they were watered they all turned the same colour! Now i don't know which is the spinich so could end up eating stocks on my salad!!!!!!
Anyone know how to tell which is the spinich?
Hope you enjoy the bank holiday and it doesn't rain too much

Quick question, does anyone know how to tell the difference between "normal" lettuce and "cut and come again" lettuce? As I would be devastated if I pulled out my lettuce roots and all just to find out it would've produced more! I tried to 'harvest' my first few potatoes today but all that was in the buckets was the original seed potato (much grown) and a dense mass of white root!! Aaagh!
Any ideas what went wrong? I used good quality seed potatoes and fresh compost in black flower buckets. It was very wet when I turned it out, because of all the rain we've had.
I planted 3 lots of 5 potatoes, two weeks apart, each in indiv flower buckets - but I am guessing that my whole lot may not have come to any good....0 -
annie-c - when did you plant them, I think it's too early really, were they in flower yet?
regards
doddsyWe must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.

I was under the impression that you had to wait until the flowers died off then they where ready for picking.
Unless they where earlies and I mean earlies you would not be harvesting them yet.

Hello
Yes, they were proper earlies - charlotte salad potatoes. Absolutely nothing there apart from the original (enlarged) seed potato - which in one bucket was soggy and sort of covered in white slime. But I will give the other buckets much longer before seeing whether anything has grown - I have nothing to lose!0 -
We had our first harvest from our garden on Sunday :j I was thining out the lettuce and cabbage so decided to keep the leaves and use them with some spinach for a salad
Only had the spinach in the end as we were on our way out and didn't have time for a "big" tea. I kept them in tupplewear containers in the fridge so we'll have them tonight instead, not as fresh as I would like, but at least they're home grown
I also put in some more seeds and I'm hoping for bumper crops this year :T
