Can anyone recommend a mail-order supplier of "tumbler" tomato plants. I only want 6 for hanging baskets. I have left it too late to plant seeds.

    Thanks

    Hi Purple princess

I am a novice, but for what it's worth I am growing lettuce/salad leaves in a window box with just about 1-2" compost in the bottom and it's doing fine. I don't think the roots go very deep. Mine are outside so they are getting 'watered' nearly every day by the rain, and seem to be thriving on it. My seed packets say that I should sow a new row every 2 weeks to ensure a constant supply of lettuce through the summer. So far I've sown 2 lots and I'm just going to play it by ear. Read what it says on the packet for the best advice, as some lettuce just grow and you pick them whole and that's the end of that plant; other salad leaves are known as a 'cut and come again' variety which means you can pick the leaves off the plant and then more will grow on the same plant throughout the season.

    Good luck!

I grew a courgette last year in a pot and it thrived. It was very thirsty though, so I had to water it every day - I even watered it when it had been raining, but you have to be careful not to rot thre stem, so water round the edges - tis a bit more fiddly but worth it!

I thought marrows and courgettes liked a lot of compost but I used multi purpose compost as my compost heap wasn't ready last year and I still had a good crop.

As a general tip, my Mum always uses tomato feed on her veg! And she gets bumper crops. :rotfl:

Frost  Thanks Morph3us I may just go get the rest of my fleece out of the store - an old bin in the garage! and cover up. Thanks for the warning

Dry today, well apart from a spell of wet in the middle. I am in the Midlands and it doesn't look like frost....but.....better safe than sorry!

It has done nothing but rain since I planted my seeds (Little Gem, Mixed Salad Bowl and Perpetual Spinach) in the tubs on Thurs! I did punch a few holes in the bottom of each tub with a hot screwdriver before planting so there is some drainage, but even so the compost is very wet from being constantly rained on, I'm worried being waterlogged will kill them? Or will they like all the rain?!

Your seeds could rot, so can you bring them into a dryer place? Have you got any left so you could sow a few in a tray/pot on your windowsill? The seeds are pretty hardy though, so I don't want to worry you, I am a novice too, it is all trial and error here!

    Hi all!
Annie - an extra tip for keeping the cats at bay is to put some branches of lovely prickly holly around where you want to keep the cats away from (esp the salad!). I've had the same problem for years as my next door neighbour has a cat that thought our garden was its litter tray. We've now got a dog - and they complain like crazy when he gets in their garden - even though he never does any mess in there!! Personally I think they're just annoyed that their cat now has to use their own lawn ;-)
Morph3us - thank you so much for the warning, I'd put my trays into the 'greenhouse' (plasic covered shelf thingy) for the first time today and was considering leaving them out!!! I think I would have lost the lot - especially as my son had a good attempt at drowning them the other day.
Hi Nanamags - sorry, I've no idea on mail order with tomato tumblers. I bought mine the other week from a garden center but had to hunt for it! hopefully someone will have a suggestion soon.
Got to dash - good luck to everyone with all your 'babies',

My garden looks like a jungle with all this rain. I was ready to give it up since weeds are growing all over the places I've spent so long clearing in my poor, neglected garden.

However, I thought I'd see what I could get done in ten minutes while a pot of tea brewed and I managed to clear one of my veg beds with a hand trowel, so that little bit of clearance has made me feel much better! :) I also harvested the first crops of the year!

One 'All the Year Round' Lettuce, which has beautifully tender leaves - I've never, ever seen a shop-bought lettuce like it. It has so many layers of flavour (I couldn't resist a nibble!). And two of the spiciest radishes in the world. :D

Not a lot, no, but it's a start!

I can't wait for this weather to calm down for long enough for me to mow my blumin' lawn and get some things planted out!
