Hi All,
OH has planted out my runner beans which were taking over the greenhouse.
Planted peas directly into the ground but only a couple have come up so I have planted some more (after soaking them) in pots in the greenhouse in hopes of getting them started. Carrots went directly outside too, about three weeks ago but so far nothing, so I am going to plants a few in seed trays again in the greenhouse and see if that helps. My iceberg lettuces are about an inch high and the mixed salad leaves are about the same. Garlic leaves are starting to go a bit brown round the edges, hope this is a good sign. Loads of flowers on my patio apples so Im hoping I might get fruit this year, strawberries are also flowering away. Herbs are doing well in the greenhouse.
Sunflowers are about two foot tall (in greenhouse) as soon as it stops blummin raining they will be planted outside. Ive got 14 tomato plants all about to start producing trusses I think, these are in the porch, (im sure the postman thinks we are growing something illegal) also cherry toms are about two inches tall. Loads of geraniums and dahlias, still not planted out due to rain, but put the dahlias outside in a box as I was running out of space and discovered the dreaded slug in them, so have raised the box up high. Planted out verbena and sweet peas. Lupins and allysum are doing well in greenhouse.
I think I planted too many tomatoes, so gave a couple to a friend and sold a few at a car boot but still have loads left, we will be living off tomato soup and chutney I think!
I sound really professional, all we have grown before is sunflowers and sweet peas but Ive been bitten by the bug now.0 -
Hi
I've just seen this thread and have a question you might be able to help me with.
I live in a flat but love strawberries - I dont have any outside space but I have been trying to grow an alpine (sp?) strawberry plant on the windowsill (south facing). It has just started to flower but the leaves are going brown - any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Also do you think I am likely to get any edible strawberries from it?
ThanksThe early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese :cool:0 -
Morning all,
Everythings gone a bit mad with all this rain. Another great crop of rhubard again this year been living off the stuff and have frozen loads, it must be the Yorkshire climate;)
Mixed salad leaves are massive, think I've planted too many and will prob end up looking like a rabbit at this rate but they are really tasty. Toms coming on nicely but I was a bit late in planting, carrots looking good, runner beans look like something out of a horror film:eek: Mushrooms in a boxnothing!!!don't know whats gone wrong but have been waiting now for 4 weeks so I think they aren't going to grow! Will leave them a bit longer.
see ya all

They've been outside being rained on since last Thursday (no sign of shoots) so is the damage done now?
Trust me to get shot down at the first hurdleI suppose I could try planting a few indoors.

Kantankrus_Mare wrote:Only just spotted this thread and as I aquired an allotment about a month ago I shall be reading with enthusiasm.
Reading what some people have grown so far is daunting to say the least!!lol
Our plot had been dormant for a few years so we are starting from scratch so to speak but we've got a decent compost heap going ( work in a restaurant so plenty of suitable materials!!) have a water butt and cleared part of the site.
We have planted main crop potatoes, onions, beetroot, rhubarb and cabbages.
Raspberry canes and a couple of strawberry plants awaiting to go in.
Never grown anything in my life before and its al going to be a bit of trial and error despite having purchased "The Allotment Book"
All seems quite daunting but im enjoying it!!
One tip if you have a patch of nettles, don't panic, the soil underneath will be very very good and if you can, leave a few patches dotted about the lottie, they are very benificial plant and provide a home for all the good creatures that ward off the nasties.0 -
Last year we grew beans in a bucket but this year we turned a patch of garden over so that we could grow a bit more.We are very inexperienced but a friend of OH is giving us a bit of advice and also he gave us some free plants!:D
We are growing(hopefully) potatoes, onions, peas, runner beans, dwarf beans and plan to have strawberries and tomatoes too if all goes to plan!
OH is very excited and keeps calling me up to the garden to see the progress so far!:D
We have a large garden so if we do well we'll probably grow more next year!Do what you love :happyhear0 -
Hi All
Has anyone got a 'recipe' for garlic or chili spray. I saw this in a book today whilst i was browsing in a shop, but felt it'd be cheeky to get me notebook out and write it down.
I want to be ready when the little blighters start eating me veggies!!
Thanks in advance

I don't think we're allowed to copy from other websites, so will just post a link I've found here0 -
My seeds are sprouting so the rain can't have killed them all! yay!
Just hope nothing eats them now! I bought a large tub of petroleum jelly cheap from superdrug and will put that round the tubs to stop slugs, but do birds eat seedlings? As I don't want to have netting in case they get caught!0
