Tumble dryer repaired but keen blowing fuses

Options
I wonder if someone who has more knowledge can advise please?

Earlier in the week my tumble dryer broke down. I had a visit from British Gas engineer (I have a maintenance contract) who said it needed a new belt. He ordered this and came back on Friday to fit it.

Since then I seem to be having problems every time I use the dryer, though it may not be related to the the repair. Every time I plug it in (via a short extension as the lead doesn't reach) it blows, though not necessarily immediately - sometimes it runs for a few minutes. Once it has blown the whole circuit (which is on a fuse rather than trip switch) and it seems to have damaged one of the double sockets (as this isn't live now).

Now this could be unrelated to the problem, as the dryer and washing machine are part of a garage conversion (done about 5 years ago) and on a separate system. I did have problems at one stage if we had lots running at the same time, e.g. washer, dryer, hairdryer, tv (in conversion), so it may be an electrical problem rather than a tumble dryer problem.

Any one know, as it affects who I call to fix?

Thanks

Try it on a different circuit to eliminate any problem on the current circuit.

What is the rating of the fuse which blows?

I can't try it on a different circuit as that is the only one for the switches and powerpoints in my utility room.

The fuses have all been 13 amp.

Have you tested it without the extension lead, straight into a socket?

Yes - the socket is now completely dead. I've checked it with other electrical equipment so it's not the fuse this time.

I've contacted BGas again and have an electrician coming on Tuesday.

So it is the plug fuse. Yes definite fault with the appliance.

It is funny that. BG touched something of mine, which then no longer worked properly.

Glad hes coming back to sort it. :) I mentioned the extension lead because with my tumble dryer (its a hotpoint) it states that they should not be used and can cause probs.

I think it's damaged the socket or something as even with replaced fuse the tumbler and washer are not working, nor do other other appliances. I don't think there's anything else I can do apart from wait and try not to generate too much washing!

It's been running with a short extension since it the utility room was converted (about 5 years ago), as the washing machine and dryer stack but the dryer cable doesn't reach the socket otherwise. Maybe I need to have it moved to be more central?

Ideally it should be going straight into a socket, i think its to do with the amount of power it needs to run, but if its been ok for 5 yrs i doubt the probs related.
