I have an old version of Word which cannot be used to open some Email attachments.
Is there a free update or do I need to buy the new version? Thank you.

What sort of attachments are you trying to open? What is the file extension: .doc or .docx?
Word 2007 uses .docx by default, you can't open these in older versions of Word. Either get the sender to resave it as .doc or .rtf, or, if you have the right version of Word, you can download and use the MS Office Compatability Pack:

What version do you have? There is no such version as '3'

You could use the word viewer from Microsoft, along with the compatability pack mentioned above.

I agree with BargainGalore, get OpenOffice, it's free and works as well as anything else.
BTW, would you care to give me the specs of the computer that you are running 'Word 3' on?! You may not be able to run OpenOffice if your PC was bought in 1986 along with Word.0 -

How about a competition for the oldest working computer used to post on these boards?
1986 has to be a strong contender.
And we'll want pictorial evidence...No free lunch, and no free laptop
