Mobile calls from China to UK charges

I will be phoning or texting to the UK from China while on holiday. Does the receiver have to pay anything for receiving the call or text either to another mobile or landline? My provider is Virgin, I don't know if this is relevant.

Text messages are free to receive. If you receive a call to a mobile in your home country then it is free regardless of the origin. The caller pays.No free lunch, and no free laptop

I've used Skype (through Fring on my handset and through a laptop) to call home for next to nothing from China.
It depends on the quality of hotel broadband, but compared to £2.50 I didn't mind having to repeat the odd word. Check and see if there is internet in your hotel (or one close by - 2 out of 3 hotels I visited in China had free wi-fi in the lobby).0
