Can 02 remove my retention discount?

I have been a 02 customer for many years and have been relatively happy with the service. To rmain with them each year I have negotiated a retention discount, equalling £15 per month off my current line renatl.
As I am now classed as a "02 select / Gold Customer", part of the big sale spiel is that you are entitled to a "free" upgrade 3 months early. Upon me applying for my free upgrade I was told, no probs at all they will organise the new phone and I will effectively start a new 18 month contract. Not a problem to me! However they turned around and told me to receive this "free phone" they would remove my retention discount. Therefore this Free upgrade is actually going to cost me £15 per month for the next 3 months £270....I could buy the phone I want cheaper and not be locked into a contract!. Are they allowed to do this?
Currently I am tempted not to bother upgrading at all, letting my contract run its course and then negotiate an even better discount when they try and stop me leaving! They even admit they will only offer you discounts if you are leaving them! why cant they offer the best deals in the first place to loyal customers!
Any ADvice

They only give discounts to customers if you're leaving to retain them, they're called retentions for this very reason. You can only negotiate a deal if this is the case.
Yes they will remove the discount because you are agreeing to another contract, the previous one agreed doesn't count for anything.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0
