They want to pop round and cut back a wisteria not snoop around the OP's home. I might be being obtuse here but I don't really see what the problem is. OP doesn't even have to be in when it's being done

No one said anything about snooping. But constantly communicating with the tenant about non-urgent issues, especially in person, and by popping up over the fence is not on.

Personally it would drive me nuts - how can the tenant enjoy his garden if he's in fear being bothered by his PITA LL?

...I was initially told that the owner whose father the property originally belonged to would have the personal alarm/fire/burglar disconnected but the first time I boiled a kettle the alarm went off and the owner came rushing round to see what was wrong. The same thing happened another time and this time a voice came over the speaker asking me what was wrong and then a third time. I have requested the service be disconnected (which it was supposed to have been at the start of the tenancy) but nothing has been done ....

OK, I can see now why you have a problem. The landlord is watching you, so the government doesn't have to. Things have moved on since 1984.

  • ok, not only put in your letter, and definitely have it in writing!!!, also put that you refuse them permission to access the garage as your insurance will be invalidated.

give that to the lettings agent and tell them that if this continues then when the time comes for viewings to re-let it you will make potential tenants aware of the close proximity of the landlord (this bit verbally!)

and tell the agent what a shame it is as you enjoy the property but feel stifled by their continued interference. maybe let them know you'll be looking and they can have a look on the books to see what they have that will be available then.

    good luck!!

Thanks to everybody who took the time to reply, I have taken all advice on board and will be speaking to the Agent on Tuesday.

The house is being let through an Agent who will obviously want to check the property at three months. This is not a problem but how many times am I to agree to the owner checking the property as well. In fact they can obviously view my bedroom and the garden perfectly well from their back fence!!

I loved the comment about the alarm, hadn't thought of big brother using the personal alarm system!:rotfl::rotfl:

I like some of the comments about speaking ot the agent informally - maybe they can tell the LL to back off because if you leave and they do the same to the next tenant then they'll not stick around either and that isn't going to help anybody. I think some LLs can't tell the difference between a house they just happen to own and their home.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything
  • Yeah in agreement to the above I think the agent needs to speak to the LL polietely and explain this is not the way to go about things as like said no tenant will stick around for longer than they have to. I find it hard to believe anyone would put up with snoopy landlords like that. I'm struggling with a nosey neighbour, shame the LL or EA cant do anything about that!
