Deals for a Decent Hotel around Portland Place, London?

I would like to book a night at a Decent [4* or 5*] Hotel as near as possible to Portland Place, off Oxford Street.
It is for a celebration, in mid-May but i have been left somewhat gob-smacked by the prices!
The Langham looks ideal [location-wise] but wonder if anyone knows anyway to get this for less than £200 [when you add-in VAT]??

Try a search on https://www.venere.com - really good maps on there so you know exactly where the hotel is, plus lots of useful reviews and other info. The prices aren't too bad either, plus you can get 4% off with the code: BK5HX8W
Hope that helps0 -
If you look on www.laterooms.com you can search in London by proximity to Tube Stations - various nice looking 4* hotels for a lot less than Langhams
The Mandeville looks good to me - you can get a double room from £129 at the weekend in May. Saint Georges Hotel 4* for £91 per night for a double.
www.lastminute.com also has TOP SECRET hotels - you can quite often tell which hotel this actually is. The prices for the TOP SEcret hotels are competative if not better than a lot of the other websites even if the normal prices tend not to be. Langham as named hotel on 20th or 13th May = £187. As a top secret hotel (do a map view) it is £129.0 -
There are so many 4 & 5 star hotels within 1 mile of Portland Place. Not
knowing your exact dates and whether it is over a weekend can make a difference to the price. If you look at https://www.uk-reserve.com and look at the top 30 london hotels you should see either the Mayfair or the Cavendish [both
4*]for around £240 for 2 for a couple of nights inc full breakfast and vat.
Or there is the Grange Langham Court [4*] for £330 for the same conditions
as the previous hotels, and is only 100 yards from Portland Place.0 -
Thanks
It will be only for the night of the 19th. Thing is I have a Ceremony to attend at 38 Portland Place followed by a dinner hosted at the Langham that night [passed some professional exams recently]. Would love to stay at the Langham but £188inc for room only is a little prohibitive....
The Grange Langham was a candidate of mine until I read a shed load of reviews on Tripadvisor and even some from UK visitors from a month ago pan the place completely..Ditto with the St George.
The Grange Fitrovia is slightly further away but seems better [reviews-wise].
I didn't know this about the Lastminute thing and Top Secret - I will try that. I'd be okay[ish] with £129 [plus Vat I assume] as it is still £30 off
Another place that seems to look good and is nearby is the Jurys Clifton Ford and Health Club....0 -
Nice one whoever gave me the heads up about the secret hotel - you're right!
And the price is inc vat so it is about £50 cheaper. cool!0 -
Not sure if the room you want is for 1 or 2 people. Whilst the old saying is that two can live as cheaply as one, the opposite is definitely not the case usually in London hotels.
However Flemings in Mayfair [£119], Radisson Edwardian Grafton [£107] and the Rathbone hotel [£101] all have these as single en suite for one night inc breakfast and vat. [If there are two of you, then the price is doubled since the website quotes per person not per room as some others do.]
Not sure what's going on at the Grosvenor House in Park Lane as they are supposed to have a £75 special till the end of the month.[They may be doing some refurbishment at the moment]. but when I try to get that price, it reverts to its normal rate which isn't pretty. Might be worth while ringing uk-reserve.com direct if you are interested and see if you can still get that price.0 -
Jurys Clifton Ford and Health Club....
Very nice 4* hotel- stayed there for a long weekend for my b'day in Feb. £109 per room per night incl. a bottle of champagne, full english breakfast and use of health club via lastminute.com got upgraded to a junior suite on arrival as well.
Well worth it and only round the corner from Portland Place.0 -
Jury Clifton is pretty high on my list if the langham falls through. They qouted me £129 inc vat/Breakfast.
Room is for me/wife.
Lastminute.com for langham is also £129 inc vat [room only] but langham has a "guarantee" that if you book their best online rate and find the same room cheaper online anywhere else within 24hrs they will match the rate and also knock 25% off. No cancellation fee so i have just booked the room with Langham at £188 an slapped in the claim form for the lastminute.com price and we'll see how it goes....!0 -
Langham tried to wheedle out of it saying it was an opaque
deal, their name was not on it anywhere. I pointed out it was marked
clear as day on the map. In the end I spoke with the organ grinder and
not the grease monkey and said that basically 99.9% of people would
not have identified this, unluckily [for them] I am
not one of them. it leaves a bad taste in my mouth that a luxury hotel
would use semantics in this manner and basically either way i would
stay at the Langham for £129 inc taxes as i could just cancel with
them and book with lastminute.
That struck a nerve. He said that legally they were within their
rights as it is classed as an opaque deal and this not in the T&C but
he took my point entirely so cancelled my booking and agreed to rebook
directly with them for £129 "to help take away that bitter taste";
They would not budge on honouring the 25% discount on top of that
though so i got £60 off and not £100. I think he got slaughtered by
the accounts manager as he was very terse when he called back to say
it had been agreed and was i happy now? [i thought it wasn;t the best
time to ask for breakfast to be thrown in for free!]
I did also get a free £10 voucher to spend at the hotel.
They have contacted lastminute.com though and demanded they remove
their name from the map.
Cheers for the Heads-up guys :beer:0 -
I was going to say that it is an opaque deal and they would try to get out of it, you have got to be careful with these price promises.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0
