bedside cot...

We are due to have a baby in the next couple of months and the advise appears to be to invest in a bedside cot. What do others think?

I also can't seem to find many. Does anyone know of a cheap place i could buy one from?

Thanks

For my first baby I used a moses basket inside the big cot, next to my bed. Worked well for us at the time.

For my second baby we just didn't have the space for a full size cot so I bought a crib... It was about £50 from Toys'r'us and only lasted about 5/6 months as she started pulling herself up and I was scared of her falling out.

I also had a moses basket on a stand but didn't feel happy about letting my newborn sleep in it because it seemed so unstable. I kept it downstairs for daytime naps instead.

Can you borrow a crib from anyone or buy second-hand? They're not in them long at all :-/

If you have room for a full size cot then I would definately recommend putting a moses basket inside, you can pick then up for £15 and the baby gets used to being in the big cot.
Just run, run and keep on running!

  • We had a bedside cot, would definately recommend them especially if breast-feeding, I could just stay in bed at night and "slide" baby over to me when she woke for a feed.

We got ours from a local "discount" baby shop, might be worth checking out some of your smaller local baby shops as they often do discounted or shop-soiled items.

Otherwise try the links to kiddicare, they have some good bargains.

Edit - forgot to mention to check out your local NCT sales, you can often pick up cots and moses baskets from them. We also used a moses basket for the 1st few weeks and then put that inside the cot for a little while.

Didn't have a bedside cot with my boy but would definitely be tempted to, if I was ever lucky enough to have another baby. :-/

Toys 'R Us seem to offer good promotions/ money off deals if you join their club while pregnant. :)

If not, the next best thing would be to invest in a cot bed. These are certainly a better longer term investment than a standard sized cot.

Good luck with the new addition! :);)

We have a cot bed, it's great but we've had it two years now and my daughter's still swamped by it!

When my daughter was born I was given a 3 in 1 travel system (car seat, pushchair & carrycot). I used the carrycot part on the stand we used for her bath (very sturdy) whilst I needed her in the same room as us, she then moved straight in to her cot after that with no problems.

I wouldn't go to the expense of buying a cot that they would grow out of quickly. Much more practical to buy (or borrow) something just for while you need it.

However, if your room's big enough go with the cot bed, they last forever!

We bought this one just over a year ago http://boots.com/shop/product_details.jsp?productid=1039971

It's been pretty good although we didn't actually use it as a bedside cot that much. My 17 month old now sleeps in it as a bed with one side open and on the lowest setting it is very close to the floor so she can get in and out easily.

Every so often Boots have put it on special offer with about £20 off, we also used a boots.com discount code to get 20% off I think, and also got lots of extra points (at the moment you get 1000 advantage points when you spend £75 on baby). After waiting for the best offers to come up before ordering we got ours for the equivalent of £75 instead of £150

£75 is about all we can afford at the moment! And if we could get it for that price it would be great.

I am desperately trying charity shops etc but no luck there. I really don't mind second hand . Does anyone know of any charity shops just for kids/babies? I am near kingston. But i guess i could always call up some charity shops and try my luck- you never know

    Thanks in advance.

What about just buying a normal cot. We used a moses basket for a few weeks then moved our little boy to a cot with no problems.

You can pick cots up at quite a reasonable price.

Failing that do you have a local paper that sells second hand things. My uncle recently sold one of there cot beds for £20 through a local advertisement. He does have another one to sell but unfortunatley we are in Lancs so its a bit far for you.

If you do buy second hand it is recommended that you buy a new mattress.

    Good luck
Give me the boy until he's seven and i'll give you the man.
