How to find the right perfume?

Hi all, I really want to find a nice new perfume, but don't know how to go about finding something I like. I'm not into floral fragrances, but prefer something deeper (sandalwood/vanilla/patchouli type undertones).

Is there a website which will suggest perfumes which are based around these sorts of scents? I find I am just randomly trying testers when I'm in Boots or wherever, but because I have no idea which perfumes might be based on these scents it's all a bit haphazard.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

Thanks,
Snuggles

  • I dont know any websites that suggest perfumes but have you tried Thierry Mugler Angel? Sounds like something you might like. It's also worth speaking to an assistant at a perfume shop or counter as they can advise good perfumes if you tell them what sort of thing you like.

    HTH!

Thanks Princess, you're right, I love Angel, I smelt on someone else and thought I must try that, but found it just didn't smell nice on me! Hate it when that happens!! I know I should just ask the counter assistants, but i always find them a bit intimidating, although not as bad as the make up counter assistants!

Someone recommended this place to me - Les Senteurs. They sell small samples of perfume which you can try. It's a site with more unusual (and expensive!) perfumes but it might be worthwhile if you want to find a signature scent for special occasions.

    Hi Snuggles

Basenotes website is also highly informative too.

Perfumes are a very personal thing. I too have sniffed Angel on other people, but it doesn't suit me either.

How about reading 'Perfumes: The Guide' . Order it from your library and, if you like it, you can purchase it from Amazon.

I would just go into a dept store, ignore the assistants and spray some tester perfume and walk away,. See how it develops on your skin, and ,if it smells nice to you, then buy it.

Fragrancex is a great site and you can purchase samples. The cost won't make you cry if you picked a perfume that doesn't suit you.

If you want to try something a little bit unusual this site is great for samples. I recommend trying Piguet 'Bandit'.

Molinard...their ' Nirmala' perfume is supposed to smeel very similar to 'Angel'

I know they are out of stock of the perfume at present, but you could try the body lotion.

I have Habanita and Molinard De Molinard. Both bought blind and I love them.

    I like Caron perfumes too.

    Great minds think alike!:T

I like to compare their prices against fragrancex!

Thanks so much all, that's given me lots of info :T

I especially like the idea of being able to buy samples from FragranceX, but I've never ordered anything from a US based site before - would I have to pay any import duties/taxes when the goods are delivered?

Anything bought outside the EU and costing more than £18 is subject to customs.

Its very hard to get samples, either the companies are not producing them or the sa is withholding.

Go give Prada a sniff or the new Prada Ambre. Do not be afraid to try perfumes aimed at men either. The type you are looking for is orientals.

Habanita is fabulous especially the parfum.

    You might like Lush's Karma.
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j
  • I just bought Lush's Karma and I really like it, it's sort of patchouli with a hint of citrus (I'm not very good at describing perfumes sorry!) I don't like really sweet, girly scents either. On the MSE front, it costs about £21, and they had a special offer on in the shop so if you spent £20 or over you got to choose a free product. So I got some shaving cream for OH that would have cost over £10 had I paid for it! (I rarely buy anything from Lush, find them soo pricey!! Except for the perfume that is. ;))
