nearlyrich wrote:I know it's not cheap being a parent to 2 uni students, my OH thinks I am a bit too good to mine at times but my parents supported all 6 of us through education with a lot less money than I earn and I feel it's my duty to keep them as debt free as possible.
I am hoping this next academic year will be a bit easier as neither will be in horrendously expensive halls and hopefullt will be working a few hours. The fees are horrendous though at £1250 each this year and probably a few quid more next year.
I don't have any younger childen ether which makes a big difference, they still need to have a life. We have cut down the shopping bill, no longer buy biscuits, crisp and cakes, better for our waistlines too.
Must agree with your views on FD we joined them at the start too and they have always been good to us, let us off the odd time we should have paid charges.
Hope you manage to find some savings AB.
Thanks, I thought I might get some comments on supporting them too much but what can you do?
They know our situation and are as helpful as possible. Mine are out of hall next year as well and so we should see a difference. This last year has cost us £160 per week :eek:de do-do-do, de dar-dar-dar0 -
I didn't say anyhting about the terrible trio
coz I didn't want to offend you but I've decided I will say it! I can only be honest!
I applaud you for giving them the best chance possible and I mean that 100%! I can't begin to imagine how much it costs.
However, you've bought them laptops, fair enough. But for example I wouldn't pay for the insurance. They've got them and should look after them. If they break them then tough. They should have looked after them better!
I didn't mean that to sound harsh like it does it's just that I'm not often very serious so it normally comes out wrong!
I know it's easier for me to say because I don't have kids or anything but it's an impartial view if anything!
Please don't ignore me forever!0 -

I don't mind. It's good to hear all views.... you know sometimes I'm wrong
Actually, when you look at our income we should be rich beyond our wildest dreams!

I agree, also including the mobiles as well I wouldn't pay for those.
From the age of 16 I have been completly reliant on myself, even though my parents have offered, even my dads side (who are fairly well off) I am paying to put myself through the OU and then uni with 2 kids.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -

I'm gonna sell them for a herd of goats!
Will your girls read this? :eek:0 -
I can really sympathise with you AB, no-one actually tells you just how expensive it is to go to uni and if you have a certain level of income you feel you should be able to support them. No account is taken of younger siblings, 2 being there at once, the ludicrous price of living in halls (my DD had to pay £1000 more than she got as a loan this year and fees of £1250 on top. )
Unfortunately we are all guilty (?) of living up to our income and it's hard to suddenly have to effectively run a second and then a third household without
something falling by the wayside.
I bought my children laptops too, my son had to insure his ( and it was pricy because of the risk) as he is in a student rental but my daughter's was covered by the home house insurance as she is in halls.
SS kids are expensive but I wouldn't be without them for all the money in the world and I am sure AB feels the same.0 -

The mobs aren't theirs. They do pay for their own.
I supported myself as well from a very young age. Everything.
That's why I help them as much as I can. Believe me they're struggling too. they are certainly learning to budget because they know I can't bail them out :rolleyes:de do-do-do, de dar-dar-dar0 -
