Buying a pre-registered car

So I've been reading up on pre-registered cars after placing a deposit to buy a new car. I would have liked to read it in more detail before I placed the deposit.

So the dealer I'm purchasing gave a discount because it was made before July and they purchased a load of cars before the manufacturers price rose - so they could pass on the discount. Anyway, on my invoice, I have a "First Registration Fee" of £55 - does this mean I will be the first registered keeper? If not, does that mean my warranty and stuff starts on the day the dealer purchased the vehicle and I won't get the full manufacturers warranty/roadside cover?

Also when I pick up the car, will I get the V5C/logbook in my name straight away and if I don't, what should I do?

I know clearly the new car is pre-July made but I don't know exactly if it's "pre-registered" - it sounds this way now. Also on my deposit invoice it says 6 months road tax - isn't it usually 12 months? What day should my road tax start on as well?

I'm beginning to worry after reading these articles:
http://www.carpricechecker.co.uk/blog/?page_id=28
http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/pre-reg-cars-your-v5c-and-the-law/we-go-undercover/225709
http://www.firstregisteredowner.co.uk/html/pre_reg__process.html

What things should I check when picking up the car and should this all be before I hand over the cheque and sign the documents? I'm also using the scrappage scheme, so I'll be handing over my old vehicle, current MOT and V5C. I should keep the tax disc right? I should also fill in section 9 of the V5C?

I think the car has to be new to be eligible for the scrappage scheme, your new tax will start on the first day of the month that you collect it, and take your old tax disc out of the old car and cash it in for the remaining months.

The £55 first registration fee is the fee to register a vehicle for it's lifetime. So you would be first registered keeper if you are paying it.

You won't get V5C immediately. When the dealer registers car one will automatically be sent out to you from DVLA. Officially it can take up to 4 weeks, but if the dealer is on the electronic AFRL system then it's usually no longer than 7-10 days.

thank you to all the replies...

i have another question which is irrelevant to the topic but if someone can see this, could they please reply to it if they know the answer.

entering the exact same details into the same insurance company for a quote at different times - why do they differ? entered around the 12/8 is £545, entered today is £624 and checking back to the 12/8 and getting the quote again, £527. i haven't a clue!

Insurance is based on a number of variable factors (crime rate, postcode, job, etc), any of which can change at any time. This is why the quotes will differ on different days.

I'm sure someone can explain the factors better than me as it's a long time since I worked in car insurance!

Not sure where you are buying the car, but it is usual for the first registration fee and 12 months road fund licence to be included in the price of a new car, not charged as extras.

    I would query it.

But then the scrappage scheme would not be applicable surely?

That thought had crossed my mind as well tho', are we talking MotorPoint here?

It was charged as "accessories to be fitted" and it came all before the "total vehicle price" but was charged after VAT. You could say it was charged with the car and not an extra, but clearly stated the individual price itself. I don't mind that part, although the only question that it leaves me with is why 6 months? Would just making the car look cheaper be valid? Annoyed though when it comes to insurance, the tax disc and in three years MOTs because I usually had it all around the same time.

Certainly if you order a new preregistered car from Motorpoint and I'm guessing others, you will be the 2nd name in the book, the supplying dealer being the 1st.

We disposed of my sil's 2006 Golf gtia couple of weeks ago and this was certainly the case. He ordered it, (as an import), and it was supplied with 3 miles on the clock.

Not sure if he had to pay a reg fee tho';)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
