Hi, my son lives with a friend where he rents a room, he has lived there for 3 months. He is trying to fill out his documents for uni and is unsure whether the household income only applys if its from parents??
Hope somebody knows the answer.

are you supporting him through uni?
if not i think he should fill out the form as though his is the only income0 -
Hi, thanks for the reply. I can't support him fully just a few quid here or there..would love to help out more!
Thanks0 -
If he's been supporting himself for 3 years or more I think he'll be classed as independent. You'll need to read the support literature on the student finance website.
If you refuse to give information to the student loan company he'll only be entitled to the minimum grant and loan as far as I know*insert witty comment here*0 -

In this case it will be your income that is taken into account since he has only been 'independent' of you for three months, not the required three years.0 -

This is completely wrong. Unless you're classified as an independent student then you're assessed on your parents' income, even if they don't give you a penny!0 -
And there's no grants if parents don't provide their financial information, unless you're on a Part-time ITT course.0

If your household income is low, he will still receive the maximum support package.
The support is quite generous up to a reasonable income tbh, so it is probably worth you giving your details.
You can check using the online eligibility calculator:

You don't make it clear how old your son is - if he's over 25 he will be classed as independent anyway.
Otherwise it's based on your income.0 -
Unless your son is over 25 or has been living on his own for at least 3 years then his entitlement will be worked out using your income - which I personally think is ridiculous. There are certain exceptions such as if your son is married or has children of his own, or estrangement but you'll need a letter from the police or a social worker to actually back this up and its quite difficult to claim estrangement.
I've just been through this myself as i'm 19 and have been living with a partner (who is 21) for 2 years and receive absolutely no support at all from my parents. My dad is on a low wage so i'd be entitled to allsorts through him but because I lived with my mum before I moved out it goes on her wages and my step-dads wages combined and they earn approx £40,000 a year between them so I get a lot less financial support. However, my partner and I probably only earn about £17,000 between us - so its a lot less and that's what i'm really living off.Success' of 2012:-Debts:Student Loans: £28,7580
