Is household income just if you live with parents?

Hi, my son lives with a friend where he rents a room, he has lived there for 3 months. He is trying to fill out his documents for uni and is unsure whether the household income only applys if its from parents?? Hope somebody knows the answer.

It'd be even more difficult to claim estrangement when it's quite obvious they're still in contact with each other!
