Help cleaning sofa cushion..

Options
A few days ago we came home to find what i am sure was a furball on the cushion of our sofa, the smell is so awful like fish and is now really depressing me as we have not long paid it iff and it is not a cheap sofa..

So far i have wiped with a damp cloth as there was a stain mark where liquid was..when dry i put on bicarb to try and draw out the smell but nothing close..today we got some febreeze and dd said after a couple of hours it has gone..it is back as bad as it was..i currently have the cover on the line in ferrocious winds and the cushion part outside too but unsre what to do for the best as nervous to wash the cover incase it shrinks/discolours etc..

the sofa is the 'Megan' corner sofa from furniture village incase anyone has washed it?

Perhaps handwashing the whole thing? The main reason for dye to leak or fabric to shrink is hot water, so if you handwashed it in something coolish, perhaps with stain removal products that are designed for use on clothes you might be OK. Personally I'm a big fan of Ace for getting rid of stains, might work on smells too. Perhaps just leave it to soak for a couple of hours in water with biological detergent?

I should stress that I'm just guessing here, but it does sound as if you need to properly wash the smell out. Or maybe drycleaning?

Hi thanks..does dry cleaning remove smells do you know? i am thinking i am going to have to try and wash it as opposed to spraying it with stuff as nothing working..will see how it is tom and go from there. Thanks

I would think it does. Haven't dry-cleaned for years, but it always seemed to do the job on stinky jacket armpits and it always comes back with quite a strong smell of dry-cleaning chemicals, so hopefully it would knock smells out.

Hi well just rung servicemaster who are the people on the sofa and they have taken my life details and will ring me back with a quote, it is an in house service so they will come here and do it so will see what they say. As for dry cleaning the sofa says 100% polyester so is that ok to dry clean? have to say we have used almost a whole bottle of febreeze now and realise it is not going to work so have to do something..just trying really hard not to stick it in the wash!

Is it small enough to go in a washing machine on a wool wash.
If its polyester i cant see it doing any harm, with something gentle life Dreft.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

it is just one cushion cover that was affected so yes it is BUT i am really wary of discolouration or shrinkage as says in big letters DO NOT GET WET!!..i really can't afford to risk it as found the receipt earlier and it cost just short of £1k so not cheap to replace! I will await the quote then go and get it dry cleaned.
    Thanks

Well servicemaster rung..£75 for one cushion..think not as also said not guarunteed to work and no refund or part money back so wasn't going to risk so took to morrisons £3.71! really hoping it comes back ok..if so they are going to be very cheap to get the suite cleaned!
    Fingers crossed!

Well 'update' picked it up yesterday and it was all bagged the lady didn't say anything so i assumed no probs and got it home..perfect the small mark that was on it has gone (not the cat related bit!) BUT where i had sprinkled the wash powder on it has slightly marked and not sure it will come out..wish i hadnt tried it now but still it isnt hugely noticable and it is me being picky as dh and dd say they can't say it so will have to do! it does however look, smell and feel so much newer so going to take the whole suite over to get done.
  • My sofa covers are polyester fabric but it looks like Suede. Had a stain on it but was daft enough to risk it and bung it in the washer on a 30 degrees wash normal powder etc and believe or not came out a treat.
I was too like you worried tho as it cost 3k and is part of a corner 3 piece suite. Glad I did it but was stressed while I was washing it
