Is your partner as fanatical at money saving as you?

My partner earns far less than me, and is hardly concerned with money saving in the way that I am.

She also doesn't understand my daily rants about the council and the government or why I dislike them so much.

What are your partners like money saving-wise?

she has no money of her own, its all her parents, which is great for her but she doesnt understand its value as a result.
example: part-tiling needed for bathroom. rather than waiting for me to nip to the shop (dozens of them within 5 miles), she buys off the internet, twice the price and 30 quid delivery, that is half the order value!

yes - we are both really fanatical about money saving which is great. In fact OH probably more so than me!

We were earning a very similar amount so bills split right down the middle with whatever left over to spend on what we wanted - I chose to buy a new car on finance whilst OH has saved his. Good job really cos I'm now on Mat Leave and he's been made redundant in October.

We are both always looking on MSE for ways to save money! Love this website :money:

  • im the spendaholic in our house. my oh freaks at me when i buy any elemis as i should be using soap and water! yeah right!! he earns more than me and did take out a loan to clear my debts for me to make it easier for me to pay just one payment. however we both had family members leave us fairly large inheritance so was able to clear all my debt and bank the rest.

now even though we are pretty much debt free he is still refusing to go on holiday as it will eat into the savings and we dont know what is going to happen with the housing market etc. mortgage wise he is already panicking about that even though we are not going to be looking till this time next year and is freaking out that we dont have a large enough deposit and we need to save double what we have. saving double what we have will take another 4 years but will allow us to buy outright. yet if we take a 50% mortgage we can have it paid off in 7 years max by overpaying.

he isnt stingy with money, he is just cautious and will spend money but panicks about the future and wants to make sure that when we are properly ready for a family that we are not going to have to skimp on anything.

he rants like anything about the government and the council but is lucky that he doesnt pay tax due to his job but the day he has to pay tax is the day we leave the uk for good for either australia or america (visa's no problem as he already has visa for usa and i have immediate family in australia). no choice about it as he is fed up in general with the uk culture after having experienced so many different cultures through his job.

  • My OH is not a cautious as me. Money burns holes in his pockets which I find frustrating. We could be a lot closer to debt free otherwise although I must admit I do get times where I just want to spend money, particularly in the preparation for my son but partly due to suffering depression during the pregnancy.

I wish he was better and understood more.

Nope, my OH has hardly any interest in money saving!

He has no money worries, which is probably why - he earns less than half what I earn (and I consider my salary to be quite low) but he still lives with his parents. He has no financial responsibilities apart from running a car, whilst I have rent, bills, credit cards, etc.

To be fair, he does look for the cheapest deal when buying online, but he thought I was mad when I asked him if he could buy a DVD through a cashback site so I could get 5p back!

no, my OH is disastrous with money. just yesterday i had to take our joint account card away from him, as the rent deposit from our last flat got paid back into it along with my maternity allowance, and unbeknown to me he blew the lot on a couple of bills, xbox games, lunches and takeaways, meanwhile letting me spend a small amount in ikea, groceries and on our sons clothes without mentioning that there was hardly any money in there! none of the money that goes into the joint account is his to spend, as its the only account with my name on that i can use now i'm on a DMP. grr.

Im lucky in that we were both terrible with money at the same time, than became money savvy together.(thanks to this site ).The problem is though that im getting to tight to even buy the things we really need.I think we may need to let the purse strings slip a touch.
Can you not get your partner more involved in what goes in and out etc (soa) ?
Try and get her to see that pulling the purse strings in a while could make you s financially secure .

Well maybe she'll soon MSeeee sense if she keeps saying it and thinking about it.

There's a balance to be had - if we were all oldstyling all the time then the economy would never recover, apart form maybe the lentils and Remoska oven businesses!!

We'd all be in the supermarket five minutes before it closed waiting th chase down the Tescoman with his magic reductions gun...

There's a balance - my DH and I don't pay to borrow money, are getting rid of our mortgage early, and are both pretty much the same when it comes to our spending habits - he spends a bit in the pub I have Martial arts classes, all comes out of our joint bank account.

Living an MSE kind of lifestyle doesn't mean we never spend money, just that when we do we pay the best price - a £20 pair of trousers I will wear a hundred times from M&S is far better value than the £10 pair from Matalan that don't fit right and will end up in the back of the wardrobe after a few wears.

Flights to the faraway places don't have to cost thousands either, a bit of homework and paying less means there's more spending money to have a nicer hotel when you get there...
