This happened yesterday morning when it was switched on in the evening it kept beeping and the screen went black. This morning it came on ok except for the keyboard not working. There was no sugar in tea.

I wouldn't use it again, until you have cleaned it.

So the tea has dried, if there was sugar in it it will cause the keyboard to be sticky not on top but in the bits underneith, the inside of the keyboard usually holds small spilages as they have a lip round the edges and roung the bits where the keys go through if the tea made it in to the rest of the laptop it needs cleaning out the suger will go sticky and could stop the fan working.

what ever you do after cleaning let it dry. If you dont want to do it contact your insurance and tell them you dropped it and it no longer works make sure they will pay out then go chuck it down the stairs. not that I condone insuranc fraud or anything your more likely to get a replacement for a dropped laptop than one that has had a cup of tea.

If the insurance covers accidental damage a 2 year old spilling tea is just as good for a claim as "dropping it down the stairs".
