pension and rent!

Hi

Hope somebody can help, my dad who is 70 lives with me and is thinking of getting his own place, he receives 11,499 in pensions, but as far as I am concerned now he is disabled as he has emphysimia??? and cant get about too much.
Does anyone know if he will get a rent allowance or will he have to pay it all out his pension, any advice would be gratefully received.

thanks

As his health isn't good, perhaps he should be looking at sheltered accommodation? A visit to Age Concern would be a good place to start. You could have an initial chat with them if he is reluctant to go. He may be entitled to Attendance Allowance, depending on how the emphysema affects him. Get help to fill in the forms - from Age Concern, your council's Welfare Advisors or DIAL.

If he is looking for sheltered or accomodation for the over 50's he should register with his local council. The waiting lists for this kind of accomodation tend to be quite small. The problem with a lot of sheltered housing these days is that on site wardens are being done away with as a way of saving money.

As he is now 70 & has been living with you, he needs to think carefully how he will manage living alone with his disability to cope with. He may need to ensure he has a place that is very local to you so you are on hand to help when needed.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

It's quite difficult to get AA for emphysema because AA doesn't have a mobility component. He needs to look at whether he needs help with things like bathing and personal care.

How severe is his emphysema and is he on oxygen?

He is not on oxygen, he has a spiriva??? I think its called, I would make sure we lived very close by to one another, his health is bad, he had a heart attack a couple of years ago, but he is not the type to go and ask questions or make a claim (stubborn as a mule) but I think he should get all he is entitled to, would it be worth me paying a visit to the CSA on his behalf. He doesnt need hlelp with bathing or anything, housework and things yes but I would do all that for him so not a problem..

From what you've said, it seems unlikely that he'd get AA as it is awarded for things like personal care, not housework etc. You'd really need a lot of care to get AA; my husband's put a claim in but I doubt that he'll get it, although he's on oxygen 24/7 and has less than 20% lung capacity.

If he claims AA it affects LHA, in a good way.
