    how easy are soya milk maker things to buy? i use approx 5 cartons of soya milk a week for Bradley

  • I think we dont have much option in UK market however there are lots in US.
    Soya beans are easy to buy
    if u read thru the thread u will found it is as cheap as 15 p per ltr compare to £1.15 per ltr
    so u can see average saving of £5 a week
    I will share my finding on this thread

    Has anyone here used there Soya milk maker to make, nut milks? If so how were they?

    I keep looking at buying a soya maker as i fancy the idea of the nut milks more than the soya....

    Oh... how are rice & oat milks made? cold they be done in a Soya Milk Maker.

    Don'r know if any one will want to try it but Lidls do a litre of soya milk for 59p.
  • Just came back from Asian shop they do soybean 500 gms for 45p.
    (this is non organic)
    I asked him to get bigger pack of 2 kg or 5 kg.
    I was wondering is it much difference in soymilk produced with organic and non organic beans

    I've heard that it's possible to produce your own soya milk from soya beans, and that if you produce soya milk this way it's much cheaper than purchasing ready-made soya milk, or even dairy milk.

    I'm not sure, but I've read that soya milk has just as much calcium as dairy milk.

    Has anyone here ever produced soya milk from soya beans?

    Is it difficult to do? Is it cheaper than soya/dairy milk purchased from the supermarket? Where did you purchase the soya beans?

    This is my first post so I hope I'm doing things right...anyway I have always made my own soy milk & tofu using the following method.

    Cover 225g soy beans in boiling water & overnight
    In morning soak & rinse
    Place a cup of beans in a liquidizer add a cup of cold water & blend
    Then add 2 cups of boiling water & blend again
    Place a large piece of muslin over a bowl & the contents of the blender & pull up into a sack shape & squeeze to get all the liquid out.
    Repeat until you have used all the beans.
    Place in saucepan & simmer for about 20mins.
    Strain again & then sweeten if you wish.
    Then store in the fridge.
    Dont know how long it keep as use ours up pretty quickly or make tofu from it.

    I buy my beans from a local co-operative who are supplier by SUMA. Good value for a 5kg bag.

    How much does the 5kg of soya beans cost from the local co-operative?

    What is the local co-operative where you purchase the beans? Is it the Co-Op supermarket, or something else? Thanks again

  • Hard to say how much as it depends on the size of cup you use for the water & I never measure it but probably bout a litre. ( might be a bit less)

    Our local co-op is an organic nursery that runs the veg box scheme & they also have a little shop where they sell f&v and sundries so I have a suma catalogue book & I do a weekly order from them.

    5kg of organic soya beans works out at about £5.63

    So if you got 5ltrs per kg it would work out at 22p per litre if you didn't sweeten it.

  • We make our own soya milk using this machine:

    And these directions:
    Making homemade soya milk

    You just soak the soya beans overnight (or for up to several days), then slip off the skins (takes about 20 minutes). Put the skinned beans into the soya milk maker, add water and press the button. Fifteen minutes later you have 1.5 litres of fresh soya milk. I add a bit of sugar and salt to it. You also have to clean the soya milk maker, and that takes about 10 minutes.

    100g of soya beans makes 1.5 litres. A 500g bag of organic soya beans costs 99p from the health food shop, so that means 1.5 litres costs 20p, or 13p per litre. Purchased organic soya milk is usually 99p or more per litre (though ASDA does their own brand organic soya milk for around 65p), so it's quite a savings.

    Some commercial soya milks are fortified with calcium, but homemade soya milk isn't high in calcium unless you add it.
