Orange: Limit to charges for accessing net whilst abroad

Options
I recently came back from the states, for no more than maybe 4 hours during my entire trip, i sent messages, text and photo, called home and went on the internet to let everyone know i was safe during the storms etc we had.

my phone bill has come through at £1,200 quid.

A friend of mine told me that i shouldnt have to pay all this because apparently there is only a maximum they can charge for using the net whilst abroad. Any help gratefully received.

I doin think there is some sort of barrier.

I guess you agreed on terms&condition, you knew about the charges in the first place...

While you are on the I-net, it maybe is worth checking your usage...

    Guess thats an expensive holiday...

It's not anything to do with Orange. They are billed by the US network provider and pass that charge onto you (with a healthy margin on top of course). They can't cap your usage or limit what you do while you are connected to another network.
I won't be the calls and text messages, it will be the data charges. Data roaming charges are extremely high.

Data roaming in the US is (I think) £10 a meg unless you buy a bundle before you go.

As macman correctly says above, Orange are billed by the US network you were roaming on and are just passing the costs on. They can't limit you usage as you're not connected through Orange while your there so the Orange systems aren't monitoring your usage.
The Roaming network pass the usage reports to the home network within 24/48 hours and the billing info some time later.
