ipod to my Home Stereo

Options
I would like to connect up my new ipod Nano to my stereo (aux port) so that I can listen to my back catalogue without having to change CD's or dig out old copies etc. Also I would like to try and start downloading (legally) music files so I can cut down the cost of buying and storing cds. My girlfriend has a video ipod, so I would like to buy a universal dock that I can simply connect to my stereo and then plug in my ipod.

I have seen the universal dock on Apples website but it is a little pricey at £25, have any MSE's got any advice, i.e. alternative but just as effective products?

Any advice would be most welcome.

  • I use a special thing that you put in like a tape and there is a wire coming from it that you plug into your IPod or mp3 and it plays it through the stereo, it cost me £5 a few years ago from argos think it is about the same still or Home bargains might be worth a look, I saw them in there not long ago for just a £1!!!!

does your hifi have a phono aux input - or "line in" on the rear (2 connectors, 1 red 1 white)? if so you could buy a 3.5mm to rca phono adapter for a few quid, which will give you excellent quality compared to those crappy tape adapters. this lead plugs into your headphone socket on the ipod btw - so universal for your ipod, girlfriends ipod or any mp3 player. maplin has a 1.5m or 3. cable : http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=phono%203.5&doy=30m4&source=15 but im sure you could find some cheaper on ebay- or possibly a local pound store, - perhaps comet etc as you wouldnt be paying postage.

    Yeah, you'll generally either want:

    - male 3.5mm jack to 2x male Phono's, or
    - male 3.5mm jack to male 3.5mm jack

    Some more examples:

I have checked my stereo and it has 2 x phono sockets, so will this cable be sufficient?

Yeah should be fine. Might even be worth for looking for something slightly better. I picked up a Cambridge Audio cable for £5.

Sorry to resurect an old thread, but im having problems with this. I find it confusing! I've researched a lot and keep reading the same instructions about how to connect my ipod to my home stereo. I think I have the right cable here but it doesnt work. One end of my cable has two branches (one with red dot and other with white dot) and the other end has one.. the two have joined into one if you get what I mean.. and that is like a headphone socket sort of cable. Now, the back of my stereo has four red and white sockets.. I think it's meant to be used to connect an optional tape deck.. and it says left and right (L&R) and there is one set of red and white sockets on the left side and one on the right. Do I need to connect both sides? I've tried putting the cable into one set of the red and white sockets, both sides left & right and then putting the other end of the cable into the ipod headphone socket.. but this does nothing. What am I doing wrong? There is also a LINE IN socket on the front of my stereo.. is this the same as AUX? Please help!! I am so confused, and really wanna to play music through my stereo!! Many thanks.. sorry if you have found this hard to understand.. I am not technically minded as you may have guessed! Thanks again, Belle :)

The headphone sized plug goes into the headphone socket on your Ipod. The red and white plugs go into the back of your stereo in the red and white sockets. You then need to select the input for your steeo on the front of the stereo. If it has a tape/aux button try that.

I've finally figured out how to do it. It was a bit confusing because there were 4 red and white sockets! Also I didnt know which function to use on the front of the stereo.. but I put it on the tape setting and it works! I'm confusing my stereo to make it think it has a tape deck attached.. but it's just my ipod! :D Thanks :)
