Where was the holiday.? How long were the flight times.?

Find out what refund she would of received for cancelling the holiday on the day, and offer her that. I suspect it will be £0.

Maybe your daughters friend was a bit of an add-on for this holiday, and a more popular friend offered her better deal...

    Only offer the cancellation refund...

    6 hrs to Egypt.

Not heard anything from her today, so I think we will have to wait and see if she produces an unfit to travel certificate and evidence of the insurance company declining the claim. I spoke to my daughter's insurance company and they said that in this case they would also decline the claim. but given the circumstances and not being able to recover the money they would look into it further.

Would there maybe be a chance that given the circumstances the Insurance company may meet her claim... as long as she has the medical certificate?

Would she be able to get one hours or a day or two after the event or later on say it is confirmed that she had glandular fever (does glandular fever automatically prevent you from travelling?),
If she had glandular fever she would still be in bed now!! I had it and it took me 6 months to get over, my doctor told me that I got off lightly, some people have it for 2 years!! You just feel tied and ill all day. you might wake up in the morning and feel OK, but by dinner time you are back in bed again, I lost 3 st. and was off work for 4 months, so no, she doesn't have glandular fever.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Just to respond to an earlier post stating that if the hotel/tour operator etc had received all the money already, would they really care if just one person pitched up rather than 2.

There is a possible chance that the daughter would have been charged the "under occupancy" charge.

To quote extremes to demonstrate a point: If a hotel has 100 double rooms, that would be 200 people staying and spending money in the hotels restaurant, bar and other facilities. If they were all single occupancy rooms, that would be just 100 people spending money, so the hotel would lose out on this extra cash. Unless it was AI.

I go along with what everyone else appears to be saying - not much of a friend etc. If she gets a doctors note for glandular fever, then best of luck to her arguing with her insurance company. Should not affect the OP.

Hope the kids had a good holiday. Its a nice part of the world.

I wouldn't give her anything. She doesn't sound like much of a friend and it will teach her a lesson - albeit an expensive one.

If you hadn't been able so send your other daughter at such short notice both girls would have lost their money unless the friend got a medical certificate that same day stating she was unfit for travel - you do need to be either very unwell for this or be highly contagious and a risk to other passengers. It would have been very unreasonable to expect your daughter to travel alone so you did the right thing.

Do not pay the friend anthing it was her decision and her loss. I'm gussing your younger daugher (or more likely you yourself) is already out of pocket by having to pay up for unexpected spending money at such short notice!!

The friend doesn't really deserve anything. If the holiday had been cancelled at such short notice you wouldn't get any money back off the travel agent, so why is she exepcting it back now?
