I think despite the extra cost it is sensible to go somewhere within walking distance of most of the main attractions (I walk a lot so my idea of walking distance is different to a lot of peoples - but would not include Travellodge in Wembley etc. Main problem with staying a long way out is time and cost of travelling in, difficulties with night transport. As your friend is coming from states it would seem to be sensible to maximise time

If you are going to stay somewhere non-central try and find somewhere that has its own "charm" (but not charm as in next to a motorway). Richmond, Nottinghill could be good options (but check that closish to tube for getting in). I used to live in Kentish Town - few nice pubs/eateries etc and close enough to walk to Camden Market so this is a good option as well. Is in ZOne 2 if I remember correctoly so even peak travel is not that expensive plus bus that goes into town and there is a night bus too.

I'd go for the Travelodge at Liverpool Street : Link

It's £75 for the 2 nights, the transport links from there are excellent (Liverpool St, Moorgate and Bank a few minutes walk away) and it's in a decent area, unlike the one at Kings Cross. There's even a decent cheap restaurant about 1 minute away: Haz opposite Cutler's Gardens.

I think the Regent Palace is closing this year, as it is too expensive to refurbish, best check to see if i'm right!

I've stayed at the Regent Palace. The room was small and the ensuite was a plastic pod in the corner of the room. But we slept well and would go there again.

Sorry about that. Travelodge isn't worth that money.
