Hi there,
Did he get any help filling the forms for DLA? If he filled them in himself then that is probably why he was turned down, he really needs specialist help from someone suc as the CAB - they help people with these forms all the time and know the correct wording to use so please do try again, or appeal this initial decision.

Can't really help you properly, but anecdotally, I do personally know of someone with a colostomy bag who has a very successful legal career (and Petula Clark famously had one and still managed her singing career). So I suppose it must depend on the individual circumstances and not just on the information you have provided.
Good luck to your brother-in-law with his illness, hope he recovers sufficiently to be able to work - it can't be pleasant having to deal with reduced financial circumstances on top of everything.

It isn't the illness that gives entitlement to DLA it is the ability to do things.
My 60 year old cousin has the same, plus bag, and manages a fairly successful outdoor life complete with flying back and forth to Europe to visit her grown up children (travel insurance was difficult but that is another matter!).
If your brother in law is unable to look after himself due to other conditions as well then like mumoftwins says get proper help and re-apply.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. DH had a stoma bag for many years (now reversed) but wasnt entitled to DLA. He was entitled to IB though, and counted as being disabled for getting extra help when he went back to work. With Sparkles! :happylove And Shiny Things!0

I've got an abdominal cancer and have had an ileostomy for nearly 2 years, neither have caused me any long-term care or mobility needs once I had got over the surgery and used to dealing with the stoma. I do receive DLA but that's for the effects of cardiomyopathy, which is very debilitating and has had a huge impact on what I can do and can't do.0

It also depends on life expectancy -l get DLA at highest rate as my cancer is deemed terminal within 6mths-a Dr has to sign form to say this-however my prognosis varies at each hospital visit so 6mths could hopefully be lot longer.
If he is expected to make a full recovery then this is maybe why he was turned down.
However it wont do any harm to appeal any way and get help to fill forms.:j this money saving is such fun:T0 -

Didn't want to read and run.
Sorry to hear of your illness and I wish you all the best. The shinbone is a device for finding furniture in a dark room.:TBig thanks to all competition posters:T0 -
its not the illness - its the level of disability it causes - if you can return to normal life and need no care above normal level you wont get it! if the person needs more care than say the average person - then that is what it is based on. but please - if you feel they SHOULD get it after saying that - many cancer charities have someone who can help you fill in the form or appeal0
