Heavy rain, poor visabilty - no lights

Noticed this today, chucked it down heavy all day, visibility was pretty poor, but people where driving with no lights on. I always find this quite dangerous, especially if someone is going for an overtake, ok most people aren't going to be knocking 60+ in the pouring rain on a NSL road, but passing a tractor for example? pulling out of a junction outside a town centre where traffic speeds are higher?

Should auto lights be standard on all cars? or should people think more?

  • Auto lights don't always help. They can only switch on when low light conditions are sensed, they won't detect poor visibility. Auto lights probably encourage people to think less about appropriate use of their lights so contribute to the problem. People should think more.

It was the same down this end of the country today as well.

My thoughts are that if my wipers go on my lights go on.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

auto lights only come on when its dark.

poor driving standards and lack of concentration is the main reason i would say.

If its a dark day like today and raining I will drive with lights on usually dipped but tonight when I went out at 8pm it was full lights
  • I have auto lights and they are great. They don't just come on in the dark either, they come on when its wet too. I assume they are connected to the rain sensor for the wipers. It should be standard i think.
  • my dads old citroen c5's lights would come on in the dark and in poor visibility
  • Something else I've noticed over the past few months, including dark winter days, are idiots driving around in fog, rain and/or poor visibility with their sunglasses on! The same people, more often than not, don't bother switching dipped beams on in the same conditions.

My OH has to undergo regular driving refresher courses in conection with his work. Last time they had some safety expert over from somewhere (Sweden maybe...can't remember exactly.) Anyway the expert told them that they should drive with lights on ALL the time, through rain, hail, snow, sun.

The tutorial material that was shown to them made perfect sense to OH and now he drives everywhere with his lights on. Tbh I felt a bit embarrassed being in the car on a sunny day with the lights on, but I can see the point.
