Teaching Degree - Depression

(As the poster in question says that she's done a PTLLS then she's not going to be 18!)
Agreed, over 700 applicants for many primary posts now.0 -
I did a PGCE having had (untreated) depression. I took 3 months off in the middle to tackle the depression (with CBT and exercise, not antidepressants) then resumed my training, got qualified and have now been teaching for 3 years and loving it. I think it depends a lot on finding the right job for you where you can cope with - or are invigorated by - the type of stress in that particular job. I've had no recurrence of depression at all.0

I am self employed and doing okay, but I have a passion for education. I have just completed a degree (with honours) as a hobby!! - Sad I know.
I can't really offer any advice to your question but can I just say what a fantastic accomplishment it is to have completed your degree as a hobby.
I wish that I had the motivation to achieve as much in my spare time.
Good luck0 -
Right I didn't want to contribute any more to this discussion, I thought I'd rise above it but I just thought I'd say I don't definitely want to go into primary school teaching, it's just an idea.
ONW, I'm not happy with the way you've spoken to or about me, I'm offended by your narrow-minded, patronising and hurtful words. You're out of order.
As for whether or not I'll be accepted onto the primary PGCE or get a job teaching, that's not relevant to this thread and I am quite angry that ONW and others have decided to try to use this thread to shatter my hopes.
Here's a recent thread on a message board for people doing a PGCE:

And having suffered from depression before starting a teaching career and getting depression whilst working as a teacher are two separate issues in my opinion.
I didn't give supportive advice or tell the OP about my personal life for it to be debated, analysed and ridiculed.0 -
I would like to congratulate the OP on doing their degree as a hobby, well done, takes courage and commitment. I can't comment on whether you could be accepted on a PGCE, I'm only just this week begininng my long slog into education, but I have to say please take note of what ONW says - he/she (never worked that out!) is a frequent contributor to these boards, he/she absolutely knows what he/she is talking about, and I thoroughly endorse what he/she (for God's sake tell me what sex you are!) about giving yourself the best chance of success - my degree will lead me onto the distinctive career i want to have, I could reach it in a roundabout way, but I want to have the best chance I can of succeeding in that career.0

Thank you Akyth; I'm female.
CCL, you need to go into things with your eyes open. If you want to do a degree in Creative Writing then go for it and good luck. If you want to do it with a view to becoming a primary school teacher then I really hope you can do it but you're running a terrible risk of wasting 3 years of your life and thousands of pounds of money.
Why not ring up the university where you'll probably do your PGCE (several if you have the choice of moving away) and ask them what their response will be in 2 1/2 years' time if you apply with this degree. Some places are more flexible than others but many will play it by the book.
Wouldn't you really want to know this now rather than in three years' time? The thread you quoted shows a variety of opinions on the matter, including peole who don't know that you have to have a Science GCSE for primary teaching!
Whatever you choose and however it works out, I wish you the very best of luck - I would be only too happy to be proved wrong in this.0 -
