Cant remember the best programs. Is it still -

Or are there now better free alternatives ?

ZoneAlarm has fallen into the trap of trying to extent the capabilities of their product and some argue it is not succeeding. I use an older version of ZA (v5.5) along with AVG. However, I am now behind a router with its own firewall. This combination works well for me.0

I prefer Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall to ZoneAlarm. It's lighter and more configurable. Worth having a look at. If not there's also Sygate."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0

Various firewalls and security software was tested in a recent copy of PC Plus or Computer Shopper

Antivirus... either AVG or Avast! for a free version. NOD32 for a paid for one.0 -
See Computer Shopper Magazine Issue June 2006 (just come out)
AVG Free gets 4 stars out of 5, that's more than Norton. Works brilliantly, updates everyday, never pesters me to upgrade (even though the magazine testers said their's did).
I'd load it now and forget the rest.0 -
ZoneAlarm and AVG combination works just fine for me, no problems thus far, then again i regularly check for spyware with Spybot, and adware with Adware.Death smiles at us all, all a man can do is smile back.0

I also use PrevxR1 for Intrusion Detection - this alerts you any time anything tries to alter registry etc without you knowing/giving permission. https://www.prevx.com see bottom of their page for link to PrevxR1 (free for personal use).0

Kerio or Sygate for me, at the mo I am using Sygate but they wont be issuing a new version since being bought out by Symantec (is there a spit smillie?) I also use AVG or I would consider Avast also and maybe a change of browser from IE to Firefox or Opera.0

id usually go for
Browser: firefox
Anti Virus: AVG
Spy/adware removal: combination of Spybot and Adaware
Firewall: ive always used zonealarm
Also as suggested above i have a router firewall on (make sure you put on the latest firmware for your router)
If you are truly concerned with security id use a combination of windows for gaming etc, then a linux distro (ubuntu is easy) for stuff you do online0 -
Mac OS X is very goodDebt free!!!!!!!!!! :j0
