is 13.5k a good salary?

  • Take the job, it's better to be working full time than not.

Also, you haven't said, but if it's related to what you want to do in the future, then it's valuable experience.

£13.5k isn't a good wage (imo) but you won't be earning that amount forever, and I live in the South East. You seriously need to find your confidence, otherwise you WILL end up being stuck somewhere you don't want to be.

As for "won't have time to look for other jobs" well, that's up to you to sort out. I work full time, I'm starting up my own business in my spare time, I play in a band & rehearse/gig regularly, do all the housework/shopping, spend time with my OH & friends and still have time to look for jobs and go to interviews! Sounds like you're making excuses to me! What about the people who have kids as well?? I don't understand people who say they have "no spare time" because they work full time, but don't do anything in the evenings/weekend.

Interviews: I've never taken a day off sick for an interview, I use my annual leave.

I lived on my ow when I was earning £15K. I'd say you can manage it, but I got into some debt whilst doing so, and am still paying it off. Don't live outside your means if you can help it.

Working in a shop is boring, all day of doing tedious work, then the last hour is a mad rush. The stress comes from co workers telling the manager I am inadequate, and then having to work with them every shift knowing that they want me to fail, and treating me like an underling though we are the same.

The other full time job in the works is not related to my degree, it does involve more responsibility and is a better job career wise, but there would be no chance of career progression if I stayed there for a long time. I don't know how you take interviews while working? You cant book holidays that quickly

I moan because I am unhappy, I am not moaning for the sake of it. The problem with my current part time job is that they give me shifts when they neeed me, I have no set working hours so i can't find another part time job as I am working on anby day, and any hours, morrning or late evening. Retail is always like this.

I am a graduate in economics, and yes I have small confidence, just saying I can come across as negative but thats how i am i try to change.

Do you know what you want to do next? What is your dream job?

It seems like you are very unhappy here. Brilliant reason to take the new job!!! (if it is still open).
AND - cheer up, stop putting yourself down, be friendly and helpfull and hopefully this job will be pleasant!!

But remember - it's fairly normal in life, that when you are "the new one" you will be put through test by your colleagues so they can make an appraisal of you as a person - take it with your head up and turn it into a joke and make FRIENDS.

I suppose that it is harder for you in your current job as these people around you probably don't have a degree and might see you as a bit of a "educated snob". It's just their fear and feelings of inadequency. I've seen it few times when I was working holiday jobs.

If you hate your job then move.

Sure £13000 isn't a very good salary, but then again, neither is working somewhere that you hate.

You say that the new job sounds boring......what is it exactly that you'd be doing?

What type of thing do you want to be doing?

  • Well hopefully your part time job wont last much longer and you will be out of there. ;) I really would take the new job as you can change jobs whenever a better one comes around. That experience will look better on your CV than shop work and plus being in employment whilst looking for work is better, as it is more attractive to potential employers. As for it looking boring etc, lots and lots of people start in boring or mundane positions to gain experience and progress.

I would just go for it, if it isn't too late- some grads are having no job offers....including moi!

    Good luck x

What is the job???? Just call it as it is written on the paper...

There is only one job as far as I am aware that involves nothing else but counting money and that is for Bank of England paying minimum wage (unless you work nights)

Well i graduate a while ago and i still haven't got a job related to my degree. My first job i took last year after was working in the financial department of a construction company dealing with invoices! It was really, really boring, i had to use this stupid computer system called Oracle which was just the worst system ever...so hard to learn and i was dealing with things i didn't know. Like a 'Genie Boom'...apparently that some kind of vertical crane lift thingy. Well, i didn't have a clue. I had to sit with a construction catalogue next to me at all times!! Anyway, it gave me a good insight into real work and learning new computer system, dealing with customers etc etc and it looks better on my CV than the waitress work i was doing, even if it was more boring!

If its money and experience than just go for it. You ever know if the people you work with will make the job more enjoyable.
