is 13.5k a good salary?

I've had this full time job offer pending for a long time, but I am kinda scared because I've never had a proper job before (recent graduate). The job seems boring and stressful and tbh I've been working out what I would have left after tax, Ni, council tax, bills and rent, and it isn't a lot.

I would've snatched this job if i wasn't already working, but atm I am working part time in a shop and that affords me with the option of sticking with this and looking for something else that is slightly more when I have time. But I hate this job at the moment, its really killing me in terms of stress.

I think 15k is a good wage to move out of my family home. I have an overdraft which I must clear off in a year, I am not sure 13k is a lot of money?

Thanks

It depends what outgoings you have. In this current climate you have to take anything!
  • Around £900 a month after tax?

  • I don't think there is any chance of progression :(

And if i don't like it, or don't get kept on after probation i will be left with no job at all.

I was thinking while working full time I can't look for other jobs either, its a tough decision for me, I think most of the issue is fear more then anything. Really stressed

what part of the country do you live in? whats your degree in?

13.5k / 15k ( which is it? ) aint good for a lot of jobs but it is more money than you have now, yes? so that cant be bad. you wont be working 80 hours a week so you still have time to get a new job. dont worry from that angle.

lets face it, maybe 80% of us take and work in jobs that we dont like/love. its called the real world. :(

Why on earth not? How do you think working people manage to change jobs all the time?

Often you live within your means, when I was earning 10 grand a year I had no money at the end of the month and now I earn 45 grand i still have that constant feeling of being broke

I don't think I could go back to earning so little, but It is possible... I raised a child and kept a flat on that much at the time

    back to the OP post:
But £13.5k isn't bad, you can always look for something paying a bit more when the job market picks up :)

My son has recently left home to take a job in London and earns £15K. His rent inc utilities is £700 pcm for a bedsit. He manages, but there is nothing whatsoever left for clothes or going out. £13.5k is a good wage if you're living with parents, but there won't be much left after rent, bills, food and fares - let alone clearing your overdraft.

Why don't you stay at home for another year until you're debt free and with a bit of savings as you'll need to pay a months rent in advance, plus about 6 weeks rent as a deposit and £100+ admin/contract fee for the letting agency.

Hi, its 13.5k, not 15k. I only mention 15k because I think that is the minimum amount I'd need to live in my own place/shared housing comfortably.

Yes, I probably will stay at home, but my parents are hardly rich. I would expect to help out with all bills as I am sick of them being my crutch. I am not sure I even have the job anymore. it was a case of first come first served, and the recruiter probably knows I am having doubts, so why bother with me? I sent them everything except one thing, I just need to apply for some dlva documents and then I am done, will have to borrow that money from my family, its only £20 but I have been without JSA for a month so haven't been out for several weeks.

If you are working daytime Mon-Fri how do you attend interviews? There is only so many times you can feign sick days.

I am not very confident, I worry a lot, I think a lot of people in my situation would jump at the chance but I am naturally very timid :s and doubt myself
