changing from Orange PM to PAYG with a view to bouncing back to PM

Hi all,
I have a pay monthly contract with orange.
I want to get a HTC touch(diamond 2 or pro 2) which i cant get via orange.
So i was thinking of changing to another provider (probably vodaphone) but the best deals seam to be with Orange.
Obviously I cant get these deals unless i get a new number.
So I was wondering if i could change from pay monthly to a pay as you go ( would prefer orange as i would have not have to unlock the phone)
then i wouldnt have an orange pay monthly contract and thus (hopefully) can sign up with the phone i want.

My question is: is this possible and are there any timing (or other) restrictions?

thanks in advance

Andy
