Can't believe people are still clocking cars in this day and age...!!

What type of hpi check did you do? Did you offer the current displayed mileage? If so I'd be interested to know why hpi haven't thrown up a descrepancy as leasing companies (such as HSBC) log the "disposal mileage" on at hpi.

If it was a private seller - was the car theirs to sell? ie was it reg'd in their name/address or was he a trader from home?

Get as much info as you can from VW's internal dialog system. Contact HSBC (LEX as they now are, at their Sale office) - all their cars come with a print out as well as a service book.

If you asked them if the mileage was genuine and they said "yes" then they have lied to you, which isn't lawful and you should be able to get yer money back.

The law says that private people are aware of these checks that are available (such as hpi) which covers them against buying a car with a iffy background. As you have done a hpi check and it showed nothing up, then you should be covered and maybe worth while contacting the hpi company to try to claim via them too...?

the mileage on previous mot cert was 64k, and service history was 57k in book. the hpi i did did not include mileage check. im going to contact vw and hsbc again tomorrow to get exact details of services and mot's. the v5 says previous keeper is hsbc so the seller did not own the car, he was a trader from home.
  • TBH, you should have done these checks before you handed over the cash.

Couple of years ago a Dealer just round the corner from me was done for it. Just car sales, no repairs or servicing. Everything priced at £2995, £3995, £4995 etc. 2 transporter loads of cars arrived every week, ex-fleet, auctions etc. Trade-ins disappeared the same way. Fairly long-established business with a good turnover but the conviction completely finished them off. Shame, I suppose, because that was probably the last place that would try it on again! I suppose knocking off 20,000 miles or so pushes it up into the next price band in that kind of operation.
  • Why not post up dates and mileage of info you have. As stated the 75k service could have been done at any mileage, but usually the actual mileage is written there also.

Then we can look at dates vs mileages and get some idea as to when it may have been changed. You can then cross reference this with the time the last owner had the vehicle ...
