Kitchen quote from Magnet (Retail)

Hi
We've got a quote from Magnet for a kitchen. They have a '50% off' promotion until 31st Aug, and an additional 10% off for Aug Bank Holiday.
They have applied these discounts to my quote.
They have also given me 'free': the worktops; sinks; taps; handles.
The final total is £2,500 - thats without me asking for any discount or trying to bargain. It was the 1st quote that was given to me.
Ive now tried for them to knock off a little extra as I am still about £500 over budget - but they wont relent, stating thats the ultimate discount they can apply....and that the 'Consultant' would be effectively working for 'nothing' if they reduced it further
I'm not that great a negotiator - and I think Ive got an OK price, but the fact that it was their first price makes me think they could knock another £100 off it.
What say you - the MSE experts? Accept the quote (bearing in mind the discounts already applied) or try to knock a little bit off?

No no no no no...
You will be able to get a similar kitchen from elsewhere MUCH cheaper than from Magnet. For the money you pay for them they are quite poor kitchens...
Try a local independant, you'll get a better quality for a similar price...
And they aren't giving you ANYTHING free, they are merely making it look that way. Just goes to show how much margin they put on everything else...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I've looked around and the price is better than what Magnet Trade have listed in their booklet when you price everything (in some things they are cheaper / some expensive) - but overall, Magnet Retail is cheaper than Magnet Trade.
Also the units come pre-assembled, which the other independants dont seem to do dont unless you add an extra cost.
I might just order it - without the trim & plinth, and get that cheaper from Magnet Trade.
That make sense?0 -
Erm, not really, ALL the independents I know and have worked for supply pre-built units as standard...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Take a look at Benchmarx - they are supposed to be trade only BUT in the current market I think they are relaxing their criteria.
They will give you an initial price probably with room for another 20% in it.
Or if you really want to get their cheapest price (on mwilletts advice) get a quote from Howdens and challenge them to beat the price. In my personal experience Howdens could only match NOT beat Benchmarx.
Tell them you are a LL and have several properties you are updating over the next year.
For 2k you will probably be able to get the appliances as well - at a push - I generally buy the appliances from eBay.
Good luck0 -
So do Howdens pre-assemble the units / offer free delivery etc?0

As socrates said, Benchmarx are a better kitchen that what Howdens supply and are VERY competitive on price. The only downside is their locations: they haven't branched out that much from London yet...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

There isn't anything wrong with Magnet kitchens but don't go retail.
What is the name of the range you haver picked?
Trade is exactly the same but different names.
You will also find Howdens and jewsons do very similar ranges and homebase buy from Magnet's parent company, but you dont get pre-assembled units. That mrs macchicken to you!0 -
Just thought I would share our current experiences with Magnet
We certainly get the feeling that we've been ripped off at all stages and they have managed to do the following:
1. Not be able to measure from a fixed wall to a door - this error has led to a last minute change to the specification including a compromise on the units - they had suggested a slimline dishwasher (idiots)
2. Order the wrong doors for our integrated fridge freezer, even though we had told them the model number (same one in their brochure)
3. Ordered a corner unit with an upside down draw mechanism
4. Arranged for the (£5k) worktop templating to be carried out 2 weeks after the installation and for the worktop to be fitted a further 2 weeks later. Totally unacceptable given we told them when we would be finished
5. Tell us that the cooker hood would be unbranded, guess what...it is!
We are still waiting for these items to come into stock and it is delaying the whole process
I would therefore not recommend Magnet to anyone, not even my worst enemy as the whole experience has left us feeling very let down. Avoid like the plague0
