Is my DVD+/-RW a dual layer writer??

Options
Hello, :hello:

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 which has a DVD+/-RW drive (8x) but I'm unsure of whether it can write to dual layer DVD discs. I'm about to buy some DVD+R discs but want to make sure I can buy dual layer before I make the plunge.

Is there a way I can find out? :o

Identify the drive using one of the utilities mentioned
    here.
  • Hi
If you have Nero, you can run the Nero InfoTool, this will tell you which dvds your writer can support.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for those replies (I can't see any Thanks buttons but I will click them when they return! :o)

I've run the utility and here's a screenshot which looks like I can indeed burn double layer +R discs :T Is that correct? :o As for the next question, does a double layer disc mean that it needs to be flipped upside down to have the otherside burned too or does it do both on one side?? :o

Never used DL myself, but DVD players that read DL discs use the same side to read.

It burns to 2 different depths on the media. I think........
  • Thats right, both layers are on the same side, you do not need to flip it over! ;)

My DVD Player doesn't support dual layer recording/playback according to Comet so I'll need to get some Dual Layer discs for data storage and normal 4.7GB for the DVD player. Any ideas/recommendations for places to buy these? I'm thinking around 10 ish of the dual layers (I'll need the DVD-RW DL judging by the screenshot above as my drive doesn't do DVD+RW DL) and the DVD+R discs for the DVD player I'm thinking around 25 or more, of those.

I didn't think they existed yet, JVC have only just started making them.

+R -R are much cheaper.., how much data do you need to backup, is it all mp3's/mpg's (i.e. compressed)
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Yes they are all mpeg movies/music which are clogging up around 10GB of HDD space. Ideally I would burn them all to vieable DVD discs but that takes a lot more space so more discs needed. I don't know why they need more space if played on a DVD player
