deciding whether to take our orange contract phones abroad with us just so my partner and i can call each other ie. if we loose each other when out for what ever reason. would we be charged the same amount we would be charged being in the uk considering neither of us is actully calling a non uk international code? any suggestions? i ve also got plenty of o2 free sims would it be cheaper to use them to call each other? any one help? i am aware that i could also obtain a local sim to use but it seems hardly worth the time to locate one being on holiday for just 6 days. anyone?

You'll probably get more help on this on the telephone board, so I'm going to move the thread over there.

I can see your point about it seems hardly worth it for a few days, if you won't make many calls. Maybe you could just send text messages instead, for 30p each.

Calls are charged at roaming rates, whatever the destination. Orange charge 70p outgoing, 30p incoming in Western Europe, £1.10 and 55p Eastern Europe and more elsewhere.

But look up local SIMs anyway; some countries aren't so cheap tariffs anyway but in others they may be £3 or £4 and enough for plenty of calls between you, and pretty easy to find, like local supermarkets and phone shops. Details of networks and tariffs at http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/operators.html

And if you end up needing to call home, calling cards or callback via either the foreign mobile or hotel landline

note the phones would need to be unlocked; if Nokias and some others, you can get help with this on threads at the top, or otherwise a few quid in local dealers
  • Orange have several free offers when you try new services. One of them is £5 free roaming credit! Phone them to enable roaming and ask about it
(The others that I know of are free picture messages, 4MB internet/wap, £5 free international calls)
