3 Upgrade

Hi everyone

My husband and I are currently with 3 and have been told that we are due an upgrade on 25th September. As this is the first contract phone we've both had we're not entirely sure what this entails!

Do they tie you into a 'new' contract? We currently have 6 months left on our contracts so would this contract just continue for the remaining 6 months or would we get a fresh contract i.e. another 12 or 18 months?

Do they give you a choice of 2 or 3 phones to upgrade to or is it pretty much any phone you want?

Do you keep the same number?

I hope I'm not sounding too thick but like I said we've never done this before!!

Thanks in advance!

As with all mobile operators, 3 will try and tempt you with the cheapest phone for as long a contract as they can, its pretty much like fishing, they will you the bait and try to reel you in.

Read this thread for a good idea of what you hould be aiming for

  • I am with Orange, and my contract is due to expire in November. I want to move to O2, but am unsure if they will give me a contract or not, so may be stuck with Orange forever.

I would like O2, as it means I can use my home tariff in South Africa, and the call rates look far cheaper than orange, plus I can import my number to O2 if I want too.

I only have 3 for my mobile dongle, but have had no problems with them since I joined them 18mths back. Does anyone know though, if you can use the dongle sim card in any unlocked handset and make calls on it, as I do have a 3 number which they gave to me.

    Thanks, Gazelle.

You are doing the right thing arming yourself with info. 3 will no doubt answer your questions (insome way...) but a lot of folk have had bad experiences on here re upgrades with them (mainly verbally agreeing something and the written contract being different).

I'm assuming you are 12 months into an 18 month contract.

My understanding is that if you are upgraded NOW you will be tired to a contract of X months PLUS the remaining 6 of your current contract (so and upgrade 12 month contract would leave you tied to 3 for 18 months).

Phone no would be the same.

If your upgrade has any added benefits eg more mins/free internet etc then make sure you know when this benefit will start- people on here have been stung with internet charges esp when they believed they were already onthe "new" tarriff but actually it didn't start immediately.

You may be given a choice of phones, but in reality they'll offer what they want to get rid of- make sure you research before accepting them.

I left 3 some time ago after one of their "detremental changes" and I wouldn't go back or increase my tie in to them TBH (though they were fine as long as you didn't have any problems IYSWIM!). Actually leaving them was a real pain - more so when stopping DH 6 month contract at 6months, than the "detrimental change" one- they were so difficult and rude even though the contract was over.

IMHO if your phone is OK and the contract details you are on are OK (mins/txts etc) then I'd refuse the upgrade "opportunity" and let the contract run it's term, arming myself with full reviews of what others were offered at contract end and what what other networks were offering, and hold out for what I wanted/needed rather than what they would kindly offer me (which is what happens mid contract with upgrades- YOU as the consumer have no negotiating power- you can't leave!)
