I'm sure if the PDSA were really struggling there's other ways they can cut back, such as the free bi-monthly kids magazine which must cos a fair bit to put together and distribute (if it's all done on donations).

Or they could add in a compulsary donation, of say, £10 and you can pay in installments if you can't pay it, which tbh i doubt many people couldn't.

generally, the publications / advertising / magazines which charities publish are a wise move - they know they promote loyalty to their cause, educate people and raise funds... it will be worth their while to publish their kids magazine, in one way or another, they are not daft.

Lots of people like to knock charities for advertising, having offices etc... however, how effective would they really be if they didn't get out there and campaign, or if they did not have offices to run the charity, manage staff, deal with paperwork etc? If they did not function efficiently in the long term, they would not have a hope of helping people and animals at all.

I think the PDSA do a sterling job, however it galls me when people post on here grumbling because they were not given free/very cheap help in the manner in which they would like it (not you Beenie, someone the other week), or when people are trying to find ways to get the PDSA to treat their dog/cat whilst they are working and not entitled to help... yeah, thanks, I really want my donations to pay for that!
  • Well said FC!

For Josephine - I am surprised the PDSA let you use them for so many animals. The clients are limited to registering 3 pets only - seems you were allowed to use double that?

  • I know I will probably get blasted for this but why oh why do people get pets if they can't afford to either insure them or put aside money to have them treated if needs be??? I know that some people get a pet and then get in the unfortunate position of being made redundant of losing a job due to ill health - these are not the sort of people I mean as this is something you can't foresee.

I know of a local vet who has had several incidents when he has been called out and treated a very ill animal only to never be paid for rushing out and stupid o'clock to treat it.

Greenmoneysaver: she said she used to work for a PDSA! She wasn't trying to con the system as you seem to be implying! ;)

I used to work at a PDSA scheme vets and I had 6 cats and 2 dogs - staff discount.
  • I didn't suggest she was trying to con anything.

It just seems a bit of a double standard, as she would have got the reduced rates for all her pets, and yet clients limited to 3.

I do agree with Supersunshine, but realise we can all get into difficulties. I just hope if I ever need them they are still there in the same capacity as now.
